Israel will derail the roadmap and Palestinian hopes for peace if it continues to build the security fence between Israel and the Palestinians in the northern West Bank, the Jordan valley and around Jerusalem, Palestinian Legislative Council Speaker Ahmed Qurei told the Jerusalem Post on Monday from Jordan.
This will also be the message Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas will deliver to US President George Bush in their meeting at the White House on Friday, he added.
"The fence will kill everything it will destroy hope of the Palestinians...Israel should immediately stop building it", he said.
According to Qurei who will travel with Abbas to Washington, the fence will be one of the main issues on the agenda, and Palestinians expect to get US backing on that issue.
The Americans, Qurei said, understand the problem the fence poses for the Palestinians, but the Palestinians need more than just lip service, they want the Americans to convince Israel to freeze construction of the fence.
"The fence is not for security, it is meant to confiscate more Palestinian lands", Qurei said.
By building the fence along the Jordan valley and the northern West Bank, Israel will need to confiscate more than 20% of the West Bank and keep thousands of Palestinians fenced in without freedom of movement and unable to work their agricultural land, he charged. Also it violates the roadmap, and Bush's vision of a Palestinian interim state with territorial continuity, Qurei claimed.
The PA's legal advisors Stephanie Khoury and Michael Tarazi are in Washington lobbying Congress and the state department against the fence. Khoury explained to US officials that the fence would leave the Palestinians with less and less land, ruin the economy in the West Bank and endanger Bush's vision of two states living side by side in peace.
Well of course it will destroy some of the hope these "Palestinians" have....and you know what their hope is? That the Jews are pushed into the sea.
ruin the economy in the West Bank What economy? Infidada already ruined their economy.
The fence is the future. Separate the parties, defend the borders, and exchange diplomats. Capisce? The problem is where they are building the fence. It's being set up as a permanent border, while the location of the permanent borders is still under negotiation.
The irony is that regarding the fence, the rejectionist Palestinians are on the same side as the advocates of "transfer"...who would dump 3 million people, some of whose families have lived in the same places for generations, into the territory of a friendly nation. Fortunately for the sake of sanity their party, "Herut", occupies the same nether regions of Israeli politics as the "Green Leaf" party, whose main issue is pot legalization.
