July 21, 2003 -- LAST Wednesday, there was a mob scene in Otto Tootsi Plohound store in SoHo - literally. One minute, there were a handful of shoppers browsing the spacious Italian footwear shop at the corner of Lafayette and Prince streets - the next, hundreds of people were swarming in the door, milling about like a hive of caffeinated bees.

Wherever you go, they go... wherever they go, you go... It just works that way, there's nothing you can do to stop it.

Actually, there is a mob following me around. If I am trying to make it to an open checkout counter, 5 of them are waiting to jump in line in front of me. 2 others will do a blocking maneuver to keep me back.

When I'm turning into fast-food drive-thru from a left-turn lane, one will prevent my turn long enough for 5 others to jump in line first. It's uncanny! How the heck do they coordinate it so well?

Realistically, this is what "Critical Mass" in San Francisco is. They just do it on bikes and block traffic. I actually started warming up to Willie Brown, the mayor, when he said in his day, the people who were blocked in their cars would have gotten out and punched the jerks in the nose.

,,, in replying, you're hardly ignoring my comment, are you? I don't find your comment revolting at all, just pitifully lacking in common sense - in fact, I'd say you're scaling the heights of stupidity.

Do you feel drawn to this sort of activity to embrace inclusion? If I had a surplus of spare time, I'd join the Lions or Rotary or do some charity work. Even the army could teach you a lot. There's some point to putting on a uniform for a cause or turning up at church if you subscribe to any religion, but a group of people masquerading as a "Project" or moving art and contributing little more than nuisance value? - if that's where it's at, it's gotta be medication time for society, in my opinion. As a poster said earlier on, it's not an original thing.

Gee, in these kinds of situations, my hubby usually yells out, "GET A JOB!"

No kidding. If people *actually* want to belong to something "bigger than themselves" they should try volunteering at a homeless shelter, or find a church to join, or join the Peace Corps or something. Or even get involved in Community musical activities. this kind of behavior is as mindless and meaningless as lemmings rushing to the sea. "something bigger", in a pig's eye.

Probably won't. People get a thrill out of making trouble and freaking other normal people out for no good reason. Until it comes back to bite them in the behind, and then they'll blame someone else.
