Hollywood-Hero Takes on PBS!

07-19-03 - Hollywood-Hero takes on PBS!

Well, Saturday is typically a slow news day for world events as well as the entertainment industry.  But when we see an article referring to a program this weekend that attempts to attack an American icon, John Wayne, we spring into action.

PBS is airing a program this weekend called  "John Wayne - The Unquiet American," (check local listings).  According to the New York Daily News review by Kay Gardella, the program will infer the following:

The one nick in his armor was putting career above the country he loved during World War II. He shirked a call to arms when other actors such as Clark Gable, Robert Taylor, Henry Fonda and Tyrone Power entered the service.

We say balderdash.  We choose to believe the words of our 40th president, Ronald Reagan who actually knew the Duke and wrote a moving obituary tribute to him when he passed away in 1979 that was originally printed in Readers Digest.  We also have a quote from the Duke himself on the new page.  We think it appropriate to post the entire tribute that President Reagan wrote so eloquently 24 years ago.

Ah, yes, the always unbiased PBS has taken the public's money and put forth a twisted view of one of America's beloved icons.

I wonder if the fact that John Wayne was the sole provider for his family had anything to do with his exemption from the military. Will this be included in the PBS program?

the program will infer the following

At the risk of nitpicking, the phrase should read "the program will imply the following."

John Wayne was too old for military service in 1941. He offered, but was turned down by the War Department and personally asked to make pro-USA movies.

the program will infer the following:

A program can't infer, it can only imply.

We get to infer.

Same thing happened to Cary Grant- who volunteered first for his native country Britain, then for his adopted country, America, when he was naturalized in 1942. Judging people by whether or not they served in WWII is ludicrous, especially if you don't consider their age. Hollywood in general was one of the fastest groups to join. Even pacifists like Lew Ayres joined the ambulance service and served close to the lines. And we lost greats like Carole Lombard and Leslie Howard to the war efforts, so this kind of crap just really gets under my skin.

When war broke out, John Wayne tried to enlist but was rejected because of an old football injury to his shoulder, his age (34), and his status as a married father of four

I always thought it was a football injury, and was going to argue with prior threads but I guess you all were right.

His Greatest Disappointment

"Ever since we moved to California, I loved the sea. More than anything else, I wanted to go to Annapolis and become an officer in the Navy. It was a terrible disappointment when I didn't make it. In a way, I guess I never really got over it...."

Makes you wonder what would have happened if that path had been opened to him.
