Duking it out
over John Wayne

Maureen O'Hara summed up John Wayne best. Explaining to Congress why the actor merited the nation's Medal of Honor, his frequent co-star said: "John Wayne is the United States of America."
Not everybody will agree with O'Hara's summation of the actor's long career in films. That's pointed out in tomorrow night's PBS special, "John Wayne - The Unquiet American," airing on WNET/Ch. 13 at 10 o'clock.
In archival interviews - Wayne died June 11, 1979 - the actor emerges as a man determined to shape his life and image to reflect his conservative values and belief in the United States.
He scoffs at politicians "who kowtow to minorities for the vote."
Filmmaker Oliver Stone says of Wayne: "There was no sexuality, but there was honesty. You knew what you were getting."
So did the public, since Wayne remains the most popular American movie actor in history.
The one nick in his armor was putting career above the country he loved during World War II. He shirked a call to arms when other actors such as Clark Gable, Robert Taylor, Henry Fonda and Tyrone Power entered the service.
Wayne's life is traced from childhood (he was born Marion Morrison) to his death, using home movies, archival footage, photographs and insights from family and friends.
"What he was creating was an image, not only of manhood or of a particular actor, but [of what] many came to think of America," says Garry Wills, author of "John Wayne's America."
Helping to shape that image was director John Ford, with whom Wayne had a long and fruitful collaboration on such classics as "Stagecoach," "The Searchers" and "The Quiet Man."
They both were drinkers, and shared the same values and love for this country. To the macho actor, Ford was a mentor and father figure who helped shape his career.
Produced by Martin Davidson and directed by James Kent, "John Wayne - The Unquiet American" is a collage of pieces of this beloved star.
It doesn't pull punches, nor does it set out to destroy the heroic image.

No problem. Sounds like you might actually be coming around to becoming a fan of the Dukes. I was only 18 yrs. old, just graduated from high school when the Duke died. He has forever remained an irreplaceable icon IMO. I just loved him in case you havn't caught on so maybe I've gotten a little carried away with my comments. Please watch the special and get back to us ever devoted Duke fans, will ya?

No problem. Sounds like you might actually be coming around to becoming a fan of the Dukes.I doubt I will ever be a fan of his acting or his movies. However, this thread has illuminated some other information about him that I did not know. Previously, I had thought of him as someone who stormed the beaches of southern California in defense of our republic. His shoulder injury making him unfit for service didn't carry a lot of weight with me since I lied to the Navy about a past injury of mine so that I could serve.

Your "Tripod.Com" URL:

At this webpage URL:
http://happybaker.tripod.com/adm/interstitial/remote.html I had trouble with my Bravenet.Com and Tripod.Com websites that I stored images and audio files on
My posted images from Bravenet.Com turned in to "RED-Xs"
My image posts from Tripod.Com gave FR readers the "Tripod.Com" Logo image.
They worked fine on emails, but flunked out on the web.
I found that Angelfire.Com works just dandy on both images and audio files on FR and newsites.
Try this freevie website:
http://www.angelfire.lycos.com/ Funny, as "Angelfire.Com" is a part of Lycos/Tripod.
Cannot get Angelfire email accounts anymore; they are out for new members, but their websites are open to join free.
Fastest download and RENAME of the URL you want there going!
No FTP crud, no "TRANSLOADER";
.....just drop in your "saved" URL and type in the file and RENAME:
say:
images/SHARPS22RF.gif
to get:
http://www.angelfire.com/clone/quixdraw4440/images/SHARPS22RF.gif and digitally altered version of a photo that I added the text on the right upper side to as well as the integral black frame.
I did that on MyImager.Com and ImageMagick.Com free image manipulation webstes.
I often use GIFWorks for quick Image mods, but it only takes .gif format now.
I converted that photo from a /jpg to a .gif, but GIFWorks image tools would not download my .gif for some reason.
GIFWorks has the easiest image tools for dummies like me. Limited, but quick and dirty!
If you can get a freevie Angelfire.Com website and quickly download your URLs to Angelfire.Com URLs in your membername give me a big holler!
I'd love to get that John Wayne .wav of your Tripod.Com.wav:
http://happybaker.tripod.com/wayne2.wav You should be able to get a quick Angelfire.Com postable on newsite webshell that would give you URLs something like:
*
http://www.angelfire.com/clone/happybaker/music/wayne2.wav (THIS ABOVE *URL OBVIOUSLY IS NG!)

My husband and I often quote the squire when we're disgusted with someone: Put his name on The List and draw a line through it. My mother and I love that movie! And we quote that line all the time too. No matter how low I'm feeling, watching that movie will always pick me right up.

You are probably right.
Check "Dixie Gun Works" catalogs
Full of good info on old FAs
You will also see that Colt changed the bore of standard .38 barrels way back when.
The BP C&B .36 was really a .375
The BP C&B .44 was really .451-.454
Colt SA .38-40s are popular with some SASS shooters, but I like to stick to easy to git ammo!
The old Colt .41 has a larger cylinder chamber but check out the barrel bore!
Early small Magnum cartridge.
Interesting, but I'll stick with the high $ value .44-40 in 7½" or a .45LC in pre-1899 BATF "antiquey", from 1896-1898 which is smokeless strength and has the cross-latch cylinder pin like the Colt NewLine .22, .32, .41 and the Colt Model-1877 "Lightning" .38 and "Thunderer" .41 and the Colt ArmyDA Model-1878 big frames made past 1900 as were the Lightnings.
I should quit talking about Colts, I may be running up their values.
My private collection is getting to be too valuable to own.
Then again, a .44-40Win or a .44S&W cartridge is not .44 bore.
Bullets run in the .427-.429 range.
I know the later Colt Diamondbacks used the same bore for both .22Mag and .22rf.
Lousy accuracy resulted for a beancounter's compromise decision.
But then Colt quit making SAs after they used up pre-WWII parts after the war.
Said there was no market for big SAs.
Ruger proved 'em wrong.
Colt came back with more 2nd Gens
The new 3rd Gens are no match for 2nds in quality.
1st Gen pre-1899 values are outta sight now.
Gotta neat 4-digit Model 1862 Pocket Navy 4½" circa 1861 that was a Reb capture; sent back from New Orleans in 1872 to become a .38rf w/loading gate but no ejector.
1st Sheriff's/Storekeeper's model made.
Good for display as most don't realize a .38CF will fit the chambers but not ever fire.

"We've got too much at stake to give government a monopoly in the fight against cancer."
Ironic given the fact that it was atomic fallout that likely caused Wayne's cancer.

Thanks, Mustang, and I think you're right about the leftist media. I recently purchased the DVD version of "The Quiet Man" and was not surprised to see the commentary attached to the Duke's and Ward Bond's bio. They treated their memory as if they were lepers and Hollywood odd-balls.
