Clinton Presidential Center ^ | July 16, 2003 | Bill Clinton

The First Edition Clinton Presidential Center Cookbook

-a valued keepsake and a useful tool in its own right-

It is with great pleasure that we announce a special opportunity for you to continue your generous support of President Bill Clinton's legacy and, at the same time, acquire a true culinary gem - the Clinton Presidential Center Cookbook: A Collection of Recipes from Family and Friends.

And for your contribution of $35 or more, you will not only receive this unique cookbook with over 250 signature recipes, but you will also be advancing our shared goal to complete the Library by the fall of 2004.

This undertaking has been enormously fun for many, who have taken a personal pleasure in reviewing the stories - funny, historic and nostalgic - that accompany the recipes included in this cookbook.

While the cookbook is a valued keepsake and a useful tool in its own right, every page comes alive with the texture of Bill Clinton's history - the vastness of his acquaintances and experiences, the rich and diverse cultures that have influenced him and the countless lives that he has touched and enriched.

To be sure, this cookbook is steeped in great tradition, with delicious cooking from family and long-time friends. Like the crusty pound cake from the president's childhood friend David Leopoulos and his wife Linda or fellow Arkansan and Academy Award-winning actress Mary Steenburgen's garlic cheese grits.

But national and international figures have also offered up some of their own special recipes. There's Pork and Sausage Jambalaya from James Carville, who worked on both of Bill Clinton's presidential races and who has guided numerous gubernatorial and senatorial candidates to victory.

President Clinton's Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, who, as a child, escaped communist rule in Czechoslovakia by coming with her family to America, even shares her mother's recipe for Zeli, a Czech sauerkraut. But Secretary Albright reveals in a priceless story how she introduced Hillary Clinton to Zeli on a visit to the Czech Republic.

From the world of music, international superstar Barbra Streisand included her southern lemon icebox pie, which was served for a luncheon she held for the president.

And in memory of President Clinton's beloved dog Buddy, Betty Currie, the president's White House assistant, has even agreed to share her recipe for homemade dog biscuits.

President Clinton has even included his own favorite dish - chicken enchiladas - and Senator Clinton is sharing her now famous chocolate chip cookie recipe.

This first edition volume is certainly one that you will treasure in your home for many years to come. We are extremely pleased to offer you the opportunity to have the presidential center cookbook because of your steadfast support for President Clinton, and would like to stress not only the ideals of his past-presidency, but his future goals for our democracy as well.

So, please send in your generous contribution of $35 or more today to advance the continuing progress of the Clinton Presidential Library and Center and receive your collector's cookbook.

We thank you for your continued partnership in turning President Clinton's vision into a reality.

This makes me think of the Elvis Presley Cookbook I read about. Probably about as nutritious and innovative, too!

That recipe has been retitled as "Bubba's Nookie Cookies".

There is also a recipe for "But I Didn't Inhale Hash Brownies".
