July 16, 2003 -- MEL Gibson's pet project "The Passion" is doomed to box-office oblivion, insiders say - not because the movie is in Aramaic and Latin, but because of its "violent and graphic nature."
Gibson, who has held several small private screenings, is "insisting that the movie holds true to what happened the last 12 hours of Christ's life," a pal of his said, "including the horrific depiction of the crucifixion. It is worse than the graphic scenes in 'Braveheart.' "

I just don't get the objection to subtitles.

The horse orders a beer.
A few minutes later, John Kerry walks in and sits at the bar. The bartender walks up and says "Hey pal, cheer up. Why the long face?"
I'll stop if you guys will donate and get us over our fundraising goal
It's partly a jab at the tendency towards modernism prevalent in much liturgical "reform" that has gone on with respect to masses in the vernacular. The imagery and substance of the film is powerful enough to stand on its own. There is no need to pander to the masses so as to make the passion of Christ (or the sacrifice of the eucharist) more palatable. Mel refuses to sanitize either. This film is about a mystery that cannot be fully expressed in human words (indeed, it takes the divine Word Himself to adequately express it). Personally, I say keep the subtitles out. I rather like the symbolism.
Guess liberals found out the "antisemitism" angle wasn't working.
Whatever ya do, Mel, just don't dub it.
Any hope that they were objecting to the treatment of Jesus Christ?
...empty silence...
I'm not a Catholic, but somhow I get the feeling that there a whole lot of misinformation packed into those two sentences.

"Traditionalist" catholics come in many different varieties. Some are openly schismatic, rejecting the Second Vatican council and holding that JPII is not the legitimate successor of St Peter. There is great debate among schismatics over when the chair of St Peter was "vacated." Some schismatics are anti-Semitic. Some are not. Some are not yet still embrace the aforementioned papal decree. Many traditionalists, however, are faithful to the magisterium of the church and the current pope. They are concerned, however, over the so-called "reforms" of the Second Vatican council and particularly the shift away from the Latin-rite mass. Many bishops have granted an "indult," which is a special permission for a parish to perform masses according to the old rite in full communion with Rome. Whereas Mel's father is a schismatic "traditionalist," it is less clear whether Mel is in schism with Rome. It is known, however, that he is not nearly as extreme than his father. To treat traditionalist as "a splinter group that rejects the reforms of Vatican II" is grossly simplistic (and in many cases simply wrong). But what do you expect from a smear piece?
That He remain just, and the Justifier of all who will believe...
Get a load a this! The folks in elitist circles are layin it on thick now!
It interests me that the harder the anti-Christers fight against a movie with pusillanimous propaganda, the better the movie does upon release. Recent case in point, "Gods and Generals." My local video store only ordered 5 copies to have on hand for yesterday's release. All were rented at 4:30pm. The owner said, "Who would've thought? We were sure "Shanghai Knights" would just fly off the shelves today, being an action movie and all." They had ordered twice as many copies of SK, not one of which had rented when were there.
And this is Montpelier, VT!
They just don't get it, do they?
Amazon has "Gods and Generals" rated as the #1 seller on DVD today; "Shanghai Knights" is #9. They still don't get it.
THE EARTH IS THE LORDS, AND THE FULLNESS THEREOF, THE WORLD, AND THEY THAT DWELL THEREIN - King David.
Mel Gibson invited Vangie and I along with a small group to an early preview of his movie - The PASSION.
The PASSION - is the product of 12 years of Mels own personal devotion to Christ. It is the most powerful cinematic portrayal of the crucifixion of Christ ever made.
This graphic unfinished 2-hour movie begins in the Garden of Gethsemane and ends just after the crucifixion. The power of seeing Christs suffering left us stunned.
The PASSION will deeply touch millions of lives. One of his friends who had seen the PASSION said, I had to pray. I said, I am sorry Jesus, I had forgotten.
We asked Mel about the criticism of some elite. He said, it did not matter because it was between him and God.
Jesus embraced the CROSS. He said: BEHOLD, I MAKE ALL THINGS NEW. AND HE SAID UNTO ME, IT IS DONE. I AM THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA, THE BEGINNING AND THE END. I WILL GIVE UNTO HIM THAT IS ATHIRST OF THE FOUNTAIN OF THE WATER OF LIFE FREELY.
HE THAT OVERCOMETH SHALL INHERIT ALL THINGS, AND I WILL BE HIS GOD, AND HE SHALL BE MY SON - Saint John.
