"That does not, however, mean no attempt was made, and if the French (and Germans and Spanish) had partial control of the mines, they may have easily heard of the Iraqi offer and passed on that information to credible intelligence sources."

More facts as nails in the coffin of the Democrats' vicious accusations. It's about time journalists are coming out and pointing out the facts.

Iraq-al Qaeda Link Found
By Sarah Wagner
Talon News
April 28, 2003

LONDON (Talon News) -- Documents found by journalists in Iraq's bombed-out intelligence headquarters indicate a direct link between Saddam Hussein's Iraq and Usama bin Laden's al Qaeda terrorist network.

Reporters from Britain's Sunday Telegraph and the Toronto Star found papers revealing a meeting between Baghdad officials and a representative from al Qaeda in March of 1998, said the newspaper. The apparent purpose of this meeting was to establish a relationship based on their mutual hatred for Saudi Arabia and the United States, the paper reported.

According to the papers, the meeting went so well that it was extended by a week and ended with plans for bin Laden himself to travel to Baghdad. Also, the journalists found a three-page file on bin Laden buried in rubble on the floor of the headquarters.

Iraqis had attempted to destroy evidence of the relations by clumsily whiting out the al Qaeda leader's name. "After carefully removing the dried fluid, however, the name is clearly legible three times in the documents," the newspaper reported.

One of the pages, dated February 19 and marked "top secret and urgent," described plans for a trusted bin Laden advisor to travel to Sudan, according to the paper. It is unknown if the meeting ever actually took place between Iraqi officials and the al Qaeda envoy, the paper reported.

Also, the Sunday Times reported that its own reporters had found evidence of a France-Iraq relationship in the Iraqi foreign ministry. The journalists found documents proving that France regularly briefed Iraq on interactions with United States officials.

One document, sent from the Iraqi foreign minister to one of Saddam's palaces, was based on a briefing from the French ambassador, said the newspaper. The document, sent only two weeks after September 11, contained information on talks between French President Jacques Chirac and George W. Bush.
