A 16-year-old Milwaukee boy was gunned down while singing outside his south side home, police said Monday.
Tony Mercado died outside his home in the 1900 block of S. 28th St., police said. No one was arrested in connection with the shooting Sunday, but police say they believe the youth knew his killers.
About 9:30 p.m., Mercado and a relative were sitting on the curb outside their home when a group of males on bicycles approached him, the relative said. Mercado was singing in the street, something he did frequently, she said.
The group tried to pick a fight with Mercado, but he declined, the relative said. Then, one of the group members shot Mercado in the chest, police said.
The relative said Mercado had a confrontation with some of the individuals Friday.
She said she is in shock after witnessing the slaying Sunday. "I couldn't even sleep last night because I thought they were going to come after me," she said.
But his death disturbs her more than the experience.
"I am just going to miss that smile with those teeth," she said, giggling. "His smile with those vampire teeth."
She said Mercado loved to make his own hip-hop songs.
"Singing, that's what he is always doing," said 15-year-old Ernesto Ramos, one of Mercado's friends.
Mercado, who attended South Division High School and would have been a junior this fall, also had a passion for drawing and even dreamed of being an architect, Ramos said.
Mercado's relative said Mercado painted every day, and his room was filled with sketches and cartoons. When he was not drawing or singing, he played football or enjoyed swimming, she said. He was planning on joining South Division's football team in the fall.
No services have been planned for Mercado, who is Milwaukee's 52nd homicide of the year.

No doubt people are still in shock after a tragedy and say stupid things; even if true...they can be stupid; sound vacuous. . .
Does not mean the writer has to include them for publication; read that and thought that should have been 'thoughtfully' edited out.
Not to mention the Great Circus Parade and all the ethnic festivals.
A true all-American city!
I grew up in Milwaukee and went to Pulaski High school (just a short distance from where this shooting took place). Then continued on to Marquette.
At one time Milwaukee was a world class city. Now it's become a liberal hell hole. I still have family there and try to keep track.
White flight is rampant with even the poor whites moving to the far suburbs.
The last Archbishop (some faggot, not sure of his name, weakland maybe?) destroyed the cathedral and cost the Catholic church there thousands of dollars of damage in settlements to his 'lover'.
Marquette became politically correct (they are now the flapping turkeys or some such when they were the warriors) and a hotbed of liberal multiple voting students, I will not let my children attend there. Not to mention it's in the inner city and just off campus becomes a no mans land after dark. The fraternities all ended up moving closer to campus after one had a member murdered on the front steps of the fraternity house. The university has become an enclave of somewhat civilized people huddling in defense against the tribal hordes surrounding them (black, hispanic, indian and white). Last I heard real conservative thought was not tolerated on campus. (I'm still in touch with some people there)
Summerfest is 100,000 people pressed into the space for 25,000 drinking too many overpriced beers and listening to (in many cases) substandard bands. Used to be good long ago but now it's just an overgrown, overcrowded bunch of drunks. Likewise the rest of the ethnic festivals have proven (at least to me) to be the same way. Polish fest is just a bunch of drunken polacks (primarily), Irish fest is the same except for the main body of drunks are Irish.
Lakefront is ok if you avoid the central parts and stay far north or far south. Some areas (such as Bradford beach) were unsafe way back in the early 80s and probably haven't improved. Did they ever get rid of the ugly pile of scrap metal at the foot of Wisconsin avenue? (publically funded art supposedly)
The spanish ghetto has destroyed beautiful neighborhoods such as near Kosciesko Park (I think I butchered the spelling there) and Mitchell Avenue. It's not safe for a white person to be there after dark.
I will give Milwaukee the circus parade and I'll give the county credit for the worlds best park system but beyond that it's a waste of space. Milwaukee was a great place but it's become just another mistake on the lake.
My family (which lived within spitting distance of Pulaski) has moved to Cudahy (and now to South Milwaukee, Muskego and Eagle) to escape the city proper. They never go into the city anymore if they can help it.
