July 15, 2003 -- It was just 10 weeks ago that President Bush, standing on the deck of USS Abraham Lincoln, cautioned that "the transition from dictatorship to democracy [in Iraq] will take time."

Though Bush was undoubtedly correct, the move towards democracy has taken a giant leap forward with the convening of a 25-member governing council that represents Baghdad's first post-Saddam interim government.

I get the Post delivered daily; have done, for years and years and YEARS; far longer than FR's been around.

You may be abel too...I know that it's available in many other states ( Ill., Fla., Cal. ) and it IS on line...the entire paper.

The sole criticism came from the Arab League, which complained that because members were appointed, rather than elected, it lacked "power and credibility."

That's pretty ironic - coming, as it does, from a gaggle of gangster states and thugocracies.

It's equally ironic that this "Council" should be seeking legitimacy in a body that thought in illegitimate to depose the Council's predecessor. How in the world can the UN grant support to such a governing body that came into being as the result of a coup condemned by the UN?

What's wrong with these people?! Don't they realize George W. Bush Lied about the nuclear program back in one speech in January?!! Don't they understand how lucky they were to be under a president who was elected unanimously to office?!! Those mass graves and stories of people hiding for 20+years are all probably fabrications too. /<extreme sarcasm off

The obvious fact is that if this were AlGore doing what Bush is doing, all the naysayers would be jumping up and down screaming what a wonderful thing this was. It's all politics. But it's terribly unfortunate that the great but very daring thing (Democracy in an Arab state) Bush is trying to pull off is being sabotaged by careerists and leftist scoundrels with no regard for the safety of their own country.

Is there a list of the appointees and some background info on them anywhere? Not sure but I thought I saw Chalibi sitting on the stage among them.

Maybe Im a bit superstitious, but I dont think I would use the term "Great Leap" in any sense when referring to a political issue.

Interesting. But considering that Sadaam ran a state just as paranoid as Stalin's I don't see how any local "longtime" anti Sadaam "activists" could even have operated in Iraq much less be known as such to our occupation forces. And "human rights activists" in Iraq? Uh- sorry- this is a fantasy story.

Oh come on...there were antiNazis working right under Hitler's nose and Russians working secretly in the USSR. Just have an open mind. :-)

There were anti Nazis that were quite well known to Roosevelt. And he refused to even speak with them (despite their many attempts to speak with him) or even acknowledge they existed. And they were high level German military men! And thus thousands of American military men died that didn't have too. And maybe millions of Jews, Gypsies, Poles, and others could have been saved as well.

As for Russia under Stalin- I am aware of no leaders or groups that were anti Stalin as to be such was death. Iraq had no such groups either. Are we "creating them" now?

Oh come on ... EVERYONE knows about the Kurds. And yes, there were and ARE antiSaddam groups extant in Iraq. Do the scut work, brfore you attempt to poo poo it all.

If there were Anti Sadaam groups in Iraq in the areas controlled by him then who are they? And if they existed or exist now then Sadaam ain't quite a hitler or stalin presented by Bush to justify this war. If Sadaam couldn't control his own country then how was he was a "threat" to us?
