What is jaziya?

I've read that in India today, many buildings that are today mosques and are claimed to have been built by the Moghuls, were previously temples and palaces built by the indigenous Hindus, were defaced, and turned into the invaders' mosques or forts. The Moghuls then claimed that they were the builders. They even pressed Hindu builders and architects into service in other countries to build for them. So-called arabic numerals and mathematics were taken from Sanskrit numerals and mathematics. Much of their intellectual culture was taken from the culture of India.

Jaziya = poll tax, a means by which Christians and Jews could retain some semblance of their religious freedom by paying a regular tax to the state.

The Quran (IX, 29) calls upon the Muslims “to fight those who do not profess the "true faith", till they pay jaziya with the hand in humility (ham sagkhirun).” This is a poll-tax payable by non Muslims (dhimmis) living under the Muslim yoke for permission to live in their homes.
