A former candidate for New Mexico governor will chair President Bush's 2004 re-election campaign in the Southwest.

John Sanchez will oversee campaign operations in New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Texas and Utah. So says Marc Racicot, who heads Bush's re-election effort.

Bush came to New Mexico several times in 2002 to campaign for Sanchez, who was the Republican candidate for governor.

Sanchez, a former state legislator, lost to Democrat Bill Richardson.

A formidable assignment. Sanchez is a relative political newbie; I hope he's up to the task.

He is a great conservative, but a real flop as a statewider in NM. The Hispanics there, who are quite willing to support Republicans, resent the fact that he is Hispanic but can barely speak spanish.

That's a good spot for Sanchez after a tough, longshot race against hometown hero Bill Richardson.

Yeah, Mexicans LOVE Republicans except they keep voting for Democrats... Sure...

They elect Republicans in NM. Pete Domenici won with 60%, and Gary Johnson was governor before Richardson.

I'm not saying this is true everywhere, just in NM. Lots of Hispanics also supported Bush in Texas. In California, they're irredemably Democratic, although a GOP focus on social issues has never been tried on them.

"sent the fact that he is Hispanic but can barely speak spanish."

That is NOT uncommon inthe Southwest - there are hundreds of thousands of second and third generation Hispanic Americans who cannot speak Spanish.

Manuel Lujan for many years represented District 1 in DC. And Gary Johnson won TWO terms as Governor, though he was more libertarian than Republican.

Not to mention the fact that Pete Domenici comes perilously close to having his picture in the dictionary next to "RINO".
