All tenured, certified teachers who worked in Rapides Parish public schools last school year will be rehired, despite the School Board's budget decision to cut more than 100 teaching positions.

School officials report that retirements and resignations opened up enough spaces to offer contracts to all those displaced teachers who have not yet been rehired.

Those not immediately rehired may have been eligible for unemployment compensation, as they had no assurance of employment in the fall. Now they may have come out ahead financially -- drawing benefits for the summer -- yet going back to their same employer. Of course, next year there are IRS taxes to pay on any and all unemployment compensation, for it is treated as ordinary income. I believe it was Democrats in Congress who voted in the 1980s to tax unemployment comp as ordinary income.

Schools that still need black teachers are Alexandria Middle Magnet School, Cherokee Elementary, Hayden Lawrence Elementary, Oak Hill High, Pineville Elementary, Plainview High and Slocum Elementary.

Schools that still need white teachers are Walter D. Hadnot Elementary, Huddle Elementary, Martin Park Elementary, Peabody Magnet High, Carter C. Raymond Middle and Reed Avenue Elementary.

Why isn't this contrary to the 14th Amendment?
