I was a great fan of Ann's but have had cause to reconsider, and not just because of this piece I have pointed out to you.

Look up the FR thread on this article. Horowitz never even read the book.

Joel Kovel, who holds the prestigious "Alger Hiss Professor of Social Studies" chair at Bard College . . . Kovel published a book describing anti-communism as a psychiatric condition.

This guy is dangerous. The Soviets used the diagnosis of "sluggish schizophrenia" to consign those opposed to communism to mental hospitals. What parent in their right mind would pay to send their kids to Bard?

And what is up with Leon Botstein, the president of Bard? He is one of the few sane liberals left. Or he was. Botstein is the only lefty I know of who has ever made a proposal for education reform which didn't include more money and more time in school--he wants to cut two years off K-12.

Read the thread. Horowitz either didn't read Coulter's book before criticizing it, or he lied about its contents.

"People who have dedicated their lives to exposing lesbian imagery in "Moby-Dick" are more prevalent on the nation's campuses than serious scholars."

I wonder if Coulter was joking when she wrote this.

My freshman year at Haverford College back in 1984, the entire freshman class was required to attend a lecture on feminist themes in "Moby Dick." The professor explained that when the men had to go down to the water to hunt the whale. Since the ocean was a metaphor for femininity, they were getting in touch with their female side.

Asked to find symbolism in Moby Dick in high school on a test, I wrote that Ahab represented the Semitic peoples rising up to murder the generally peace-loving, but potentially deadly, Caucasian race. And that Ishmael was Israel, caught in between the two. And that Starbuck would open a huge multinational coffee chain first.

You can read anything into anything if you try hard enough.

Columbia history professor Eric Foner claimed Radosh's book on the Rosenbergs violated the canons of historical scholarship.

Foner is not exactly unbiased on the matter of communism as he was a red-diaper baby... father was Philip Foner.

"I criticized labor historians for their devotion to Marx and their admiration of such Marxist historians as Philip Foner, Herbert Aptheker, and Eric Hobsbawm. Marx’s theories are wicked and wrong, said I, and Foner’s, Aptheker’s, and Hobsbawm’s “scholarship” is irreparably marred by their communism.

Foner’s multi-volume “History of the Labor Movement in the United States,” for example, is predictable and sectarian. He demonstrates little understanding of workers or of capitalism, and attacks all other historians who are not sufficiently supportive of Soviet communism. Foner was also a plagiarist and may even have destroyed historical documents to prevent other researchers from viewing them."

Also this...

Philip Foner, author of "Karl Marx Remembered", had this to say,

"I am confident that when the 200th anniversary of the death of Karl Marx will be observed, the entire world will be socialist."

I'm trying to do a little "transactional analysis" here. I think that Ann Coulter wanted to write a book that "exposed" liberals as the catspaws of America's enemies. I believe that she wanted to distinguish her book from books on the same general subject (e.g. "Useful Idiots"; "Radical Son"), and she wanted a snappy, one word title to remind readers of her best seller, "Slander". But why did she have to throw the "T" word around? No, I don't believe that JFK was a traitor, and I don't believe that the DNC was being run by the Politburo. And why, in the name of all that's Holy, did she have to defend a loud-mouthed alcoholic like McCarthy?

The nation's colleges and universities have become a Safe Streets program for traitors and lunatics.

Florence King's father used to say that colleges existed to provide employment for men who couldn't make a living with their hands or their heads.
