President Bush Receives Cool Reception in South Africa
Policies on Iraq, AIDS, International Court Sources of Criticism
By Dana Milbank and Emily Wax Washington Post Staff Writers Wednesday, July 9, 2003; 12:58 PM
PRETORIA, South Africa, July 9 -- President Bush received a cool reception today in the capital of Africa's largest economic power, as opinion leaders across the continent complained about his policies on Iraq, AIDS and the International Criminal Court.
Bush has come with many goodies for this long struggling region: the promise of billions of new dollars for development, disease fighting and counter-terrorism efforts, and the prestige conferred by his making only the third sub-Saharan Africa tour by a U.S. president. But Africans have responded with anti-Bush demonstrations, diplomatic snubs and critical media coverage.

Why on earth are my tax dollars going to this country for AIDS or anything else?
President Bush had better stay home and pay more attention to his own people and leave the African problems to the Africans.

"opinion leaders across the continent complained about his policies on Iraq, AIDS and the International Criminal Court"
What a joke. Those same opinion "leaders" will gladly take Bush's AIDS money, and those same "leaders" refuse to have their own African leader Mugabe tried by the International Criminal Court, but they want to criticize Bush on that issue?!

Just because the leaders of these countries are fools, doesn't mean the people who suffer don't want or need the help...The hardest part about being a good leader is doing the right thing even when no one else agrees with you. Bush is a great leader because he follows his principles despite what others say!

Bush and his advisors should have seen that over the last 40 years the giving of largess to third world countries (extracted from the American taxpayer, of course) and otherwise grovelling to them brings nothing but contempt. I don't know if he believes confiscating American taxpayers' money and sending it to Africa (i) will really help the situation there, or (ii) will help him make political points back home. Either way, it is a rape of the American taxpayer and a futile giveaway. We'll get more respect from the third world by telling them to solve their own problems.

Rush talked about this yesterday. Clintoon went over and (in his saddest voice) apologized for America's part in slavery, and they hailed him as a wonderful leader!
Bush goes over there with a huge check for AIDS, gives a beautiful speech trashing slavery, and they hate him!
They all sound like Rats to me. Ignorant Rats.

You have a good heart Princess! But the dictators will squander the money and the people still suffer (take what saddam has done over the past decade with the oil for food program). Plus, it is taxpayer money going to these thugs, and I don't wanna pay for it! I agree with you in principle to you point.

Wise up folks. The WP article is a pantload and a hatchet job. Note the mention of the 2000 German demonstrators--has nothing to do with Africa. Bush has received warm welcomes at his stops in Africa, as evidenced by the video I've seen from the trip.
Now, regarding the money we send them to fight AIDS, I would argue that this is money spent on national security. We're fighting a world-wide war right now and we need to discourage the spawning of new terroist pockets. Bush's policies are also great politics--they pull the rug out from any attack on him as being uncaring.
