Not enough folks to have Gephardt meetup meet
Mon Jul 07 2003 18:33:31 ET

Online supporters of Democratic presidential hopeful Dick Gephardt appear to have trouble organizing, recent email exchanges reveal.

Campaigns have used the grassroots website meetup.com to encourage supporters to get together in their cities and plan campaign activities. But Gephardt, it appears, will have to fall back on more traditional get-out-the vote strategies:

Subject: Your Gephardt in 2004 Meetup is Cancelled

Important

=================================================================

Unfortunately, less than 5 people confirmed that they'd attend the Washington, DC Gephardt in 2004 Meetup, so this month's Meetup is CANCELLED. (People prefer Meetups when at least 5 people confirm.) Help make it happen next month! See below.

=================================================================

Meetup is growing very fast, so please be patient while more Gephardt Supporters around Washington, DC (and everywhere) discover National Gephardt in 2004 Meetup Day.

What you can do now:

1. Help spread the word for next month:

National Gephardt in 2004 Meetup Day

Sounds just as important as National Head Lice Day.

The most painful thing I ever saw was on a TV documentary about the 1996 Republican primaries. They had Lamar Alexander going to a meeting of campaign supporters in New Hampshire. So, he walks in with his staff and the cameras, and theere is one strange looking guy sitting there. Lamar was visibly confused, sat down next to the guy for a few seconds, then got the hell out of there. Cringe worthy.

Get some cardboard cutouts of people, add a laugh track, and he can have his meeting. It's like my grandpappy said, "I'll never vote for someone with no eyebrows."

... Maybe because no one cares ? ... ;->

Gephardt's got a tough row to hoe - he can't be heard above the Democratic din unless he becomes shrill and loud - and he knows that won't sell.

Tee hee.

What is it with this new term Meetup anyway? Isn't that what Dean is using these days? Isn't it just internet campaign fundraising? Maybe they didn't want to be truthful and call it Pony Up although perhaps that's used when it's more of a horse race.
