Accident investigators yesterday blew a hole bigger than a basketball in a space shuttle's carbon panel, bolstering suspicion that a chunk of foam insulation caused enough damage to destroy the Space Shuttle Columbia.

"We have found the smoking gun," Scott Hubbard, a member of the independent Columbia Accident Investigation Board, said following the test in San Antonio.

Video of foam test.  LINK

This is an MPG file

You can open your Quicktime/RealOne or other device and paste this address: http://www.knfo.net/video/foamtest.mpg

Both Quicktime/RealOne were tested, and do work.

"The foam struck the panel at more than 500 miles per hour."

I saw the NASA guy on the tube yesterday. I have a question about the test.

The foam and the shuttle are both riding the same launch vehicle at the same speed.

When the foam came off, how far was it from the shuttle? Are they saying that a difference in the speed of both objects became over 500 mph within a distance of less than the total length of the rocket?

What was the speed of the vehicle after 82 seconds?
