Marvel Comics: "Princess Diana will be reincarnated as a comic book superhero this autumn"

'Di Another Day' outrage

July 8 2003

Princess Diana will be reincarnated as a mutant comic book superhero this autumn, according to publisher Marvel Comics.

The character will appear in a five-series storyline called "Di Another Day" in Marvel's "X-Statix" monthly comic, a spinoff from its popular X-Men, Marvel spokesman Brian Reinert said today.

The first of the comic books will go on sale on September 10.

Di appears as one of the team of super-powered mutants in a satirical look at fame and pop culture, Reinert said.

"They're more concerned about their bank accounts than saving people from injuries and saving the world," he said.

"X-Statix" writer Peter Milligan said the late princess was "tailor-made" for the series because she is "someone famous for being famous".

"At a glance, Diana may not resemble the flying, teleporting, lethally oscillating characters that populate my comic, but the strange power she exerts from beyond the grave certainly makes her a valid subject to explore," Milligan said in a statement issued by Marvel. "And, of course, she looks great in Spandex!"

A Buckingham Palace spokesman has called the idea "utterly appalling" and a "cheap attempt to cash in on Diana's fame and the tragic circumstances surrounding her death".

Do they have a Monica super hero? Or maybe they can make a Clinton one who goes around chomping cigars and saying "Well blow me down!"

Funny how time puts things in their proper perspective.

Lady Di as a superhero? Oh please. What's she gonna do, whine her opponents into submission?

"I say, it's just dreadful what you're planning on doing to those poor people. You really should be ashamed of yourself."

I'm sure the average atomic powered supervillan would be greatly impressed by her impassioned appeal. It would probably delay his deployment of mass destruction on millions of huddled innocents by at least a second or two.

LOL! I thought they were used to everybody doing this already. Maybe they'll give her the superpower to fade to nothingness and not be remembered or talked about ever again.

"X-Statix" writer Peter Milligan...

I was scratching my head reading this article until I got to this point.
Then it made sense.

Peter Milligan is one seriously warped dude (he did a series called "Marshall Law" that had to been seen to be believed).

This will be NO love letter to Princess Di.....he he.

The point is, this will be a satire about people who are famous for no other reason than that they are famous. Andy Warhol was the guy who made the concept famous.

Okay, so Prince Charles was out walking his dog.

One of his subjects walked by and said, "Morning..."

"Not really," replied Charles, "I'm just walking my dog."

Princess Diana will be reincarnated as a mutant comic book superhero...

And pray tell, just how different is this reincarnation from what she was in real life?

This would have to be the dumbest "superhero" ever created. Diana was a vapid bird. Thin as a rail, and dumb as a board. I cannot fathom why anyone would consider her great in any way (her assistant told how she used to hate meeting with homeless and insultingly berated them, but did it for P.R. advantage over Charles), or sexy (Frank Zappa: "Who wants to ride on an ironing board? That 'aint no fun, I tried me one."). Why can't the world just forget about her insignificant existence already?
