Four years ago, a British farmer shot and killed a 16-year-old burglar on his property and wounded an older accomplice.

The wounded intruder, a career criminal with 34 convictions, served 18 months for the burglary.

The Norfolk farmer, a recluse named Tony Martin, was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

If a drunken SOB starts a fire in MY garage, I'd kill him, too. And if any bleeding heart liberals decided to vandalize and harass me, they would get a slab in the morgue right beside him.

In Tennessee it is pronounced "Shote" with a long "O" and silent "E".

Thanks for the Choate! It looks like you are both right. When you each gave a different answer, "Chote" and "Ko-ate", I went looking. It seems "Chote" is more prevalent.

Then I came on this: "inchoate being only partly in existence, esp: imperfectly formed or formulated" and wonder what the Choates have to say about that.

Thanks Snippy. I remember hearing about this Oregon case.

Justified shooting as far as I'm concerned. So is the one in Britain.

New a man named Choate. He pronounced his name the same as what we call a baby pig.

The problem is that the British insist that banning guns works, despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
So when people say they have a right to defend themselves, and point to cases here in the states that go long ways to proving it, they balk, turn chalk white, and flagellate like dinoflagellum.

In the Oregon case, the local liberal paper (Statesman Journal) tried everything it could to paint Choate as just a good kid who made a mistake. The criminal's delinquent friends have been harassing the home owner. This city, Salem Oregon has a police force that was gutted by a liberal mayor, so it's either self defence or be a victim.

“There is a lobby in this country that says the average man has the right to protect himself , and damn the cost,” Johnston said. “The Choate case provides a cautionary note to say this is not always the way to go. This kind of thing can happen.”

The BBC is not merely biased, it's out of its %$^#ing mind.

It's not just a gun issue. The British seem to have an aversion to defending themselves against any kind of assault. I knew a young man who was attacked by two others with knives in a robbery attempt. He managed go twist one's arm around and stab the attacker in the thigh with his own knife. The victim recieved over five hundred stitches and a charge which would be our equivalent of assault with a deadly weapon. He went to trial and was acquitted at considerable expense and inconvenience. The attackers were convicted but didn't get any jail time.

Translation: The outcome of "Real Story" has been predetermined, before the first interview has even begun.

Ah, the impartial BBC "News."

A question that's a little off-side, can anyone tell me the correct pronunciation of that name "Choate"?

There's a very snotty private school in NYC called the Choate School. It's pronounced "ch-oat" here, just like "boat" with a ch- before the "oat" instead of a "b-".

Bleah, my brain's not working on all cylinders today. Choate's not actually IN New York City, it's a boarding school up in Connecticut. But lots of NYC snotkids go there.

actually I sort of like this idea. I want the *socialist* Brits to be afraid (very afraid) of the United States, and I want the sane conservative Brits to realize there is still a place of refuge.

There was two sides to the Bernard Goetz incident in the NY subway years ago ...

innocent people dying in violent crimes dosn't seem to effect the criminal crime wave from decreasing any ---

definitely more like increasing it !
