Radical Republicans would risk each other lives for equal rights for the newly freeded Blacks during reconstruction. You didn't learn this in the Urban Schools did you?

Democrats were the Slave Party then, and they use the welfare state for the same purposes now to maintain an indentured constituency.

On 30th March, 1868, Johnson's impeachment trial began. Johnson was the first and only president of the United States to be impeached.

You need to update this. Thanks for the history lesson.

Welcome to FreeRepublic!

Although I recognize the names of the alleged Radical Republicans, I've never heard or read any of this. I was taught that Lincoln was the most radical of any Republican.

Most Blacks that I know recognize Lincoln as making some contribution, but not progressive enough. They also say that the Party of Lincoln that freed them ended with Lincoln. In other words, "what have you done for me since"?

From your profile:"What do you think is the best music to terrify the terrorist?"

"Enter Sandman" by Metallica
"Rooster" by Alice in Chains
"Don't Tread On Me" by Metallica
"Velcro Fly" by ZZ Top
And my personal favorite "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails

Play those five at high volume over and over and they'll be urine-covered jelly in about four hours.

I favor the Civil Rights Act of 1964
and it must be enforced at gunpoint if necessary.

Thanks for the background information. I knew that Republicans were specifically listed among the targets of the KKK. The History Channel did a documentary on the KKK; it neglected to mention ANY political parties until the 1920s when some candidate for governor tried to get Republican support. It also mentioned David Duke's run for the Senate as a Republican; it neglected to mention that David had previously run in politics as a Democrat and a third party candidate.

I don't recall where I originally read the "charter" of the post Civil War KKK and their prohibition on Republicans. It certainly is not widely publicized these days.

I wouldn't recommend searching for "Republicans" and "Ku Klux Klan" on google; I've done this in the past to try to find evidence of the KKK's opposition to Republicans and hit too many non-relevant articles instead. Maybe this has changed but I doubt it.

Ku Klux Klan platform calling for the murders of the Negro and the Republicans

Now we know why Pat Buchannan is no longer a Republican.

The epilogue of this story came during the constitutional crisis of 1876. The Democrats demanded an end to reconstruction as the price to allow Benjamin Harrison to become President. Shortly after, the Democrats enacted the Jim Crow laws and installed segregation. The South became the Solid South, voting reliably Democratic until after WWII, when the northern wing of the Democratic Party began advocating an end to segregation and passage of civil rights legislation.

The fight for civil rights came down to northern Democrats agains southern democrats. In 1964, congressional Republicans in both houses voted for the bill in higher percentages than the Democrats, due to opposition from their southern wing.
