At the conclusion of the dedication ceremony of the Constitution Center, today, July 4th, 2003, on stage, a select few were asked to pull the red, white, and blue ribbons, pulling down ceremonial drape... What they pulled down, instead, was quite unexpected. A heavy frame surrounding a mural came crashing down right in front of the first row of these special guests at the ceremony.

... might instead be nominated by the President, Mr. Bush, to be Chief Justice. Did Rhenquist retire or resign? Did I miss something?
I will say this, I do not support O'Connors ruling in this and a few other cases, but I do support her in many others. And if Rhenquist retires before O'Connor and if Bush is President and if he appoints O'Connor to be Chief Justice and if she is confirmed, it would in NO way change my support for President Bush. Any more than it has changed my opinion for Ronald Reagan who is responsible for her being on the court to begin with. I love, admire, respect, and support Reagan now as much as I ever did. And I do Bush as well.

This might be a little unrelated, but were there any FReepers out at the NCC dedication or in the Independence Mall area to counter-protest? I was at the dedication, and afterwards while they let everyone into the museum, a couple hundred fruits and nuts made their way out of Independence Mall onto 6th Street in front of the museum. It was a veritable tossed salad of "protests." I saw the usual "Bush is a liar/empire builder/despot/etc.", "Free Mumia", "Free Mumia because Bush is a liar", "Queers for Peace", some NOW NAGs with signs that I think dealt with abortion, and other such signs with agglomerated, often unrelated, liberal causes. I looked around Independence Mall and the NCC area for some FReepers or any counter protesters, as I'd read about a possible FReep on some thread, but couldn't find any. I didn't have any signs on me, and only had a small flag, as I was mainly there for the dedication.

Has anyone seen the aged Senator Spector since he and Mayor Street were hit?

Why was O'Connor being feted here? And not just here -- she's recently been receiving a bunch of press, and these suck-up type of awards recently, as I recall. The Chief Justice thing was a reported over the past week or so on FR.

A morning of pride and patriotism at Philadelphia's new National Constitution Center on Independence Mall ended with a ride to the hospital. At the same moment Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor pulled the ribbon on the new center, the scenery backdrop fell, striking Mayor John Street and National Constitution Center president Joe Torsella.
Synchronicity points out the symbology so even a 5-year old can understand it. O'Connor pulls the strings for a favored class, and the Constitution comes crashing down around her. I wonder if she's bright enough to get the hint.

Rush Limbaugh, 30 June, says it's a Novak report:
O'Connor In Line For Chief Supreme? Robert Novak has a fascinating column about the rumors in Washington concerning the Supreme Court. Novak says William Rehnquist could retire, and that Bush would then nominate Sandra Day O'Connor to be the new chief justice.
Alberto Gonzales, currently on his staff, as counsel, would then be nominated to fill the empty seat. The thinking, Novak says, is that Bush would be able to reap a lot of praise for nominating the first woman to be chief justice. Part and parcel of this is that O'Connor has ruled the way she has in recent cases in order to grease her confirmation hearings to be chief justice. After her opinions in the two rulings last week involving the Michigan affirmative action case, as well as Lawrence vs. Texas, the sodomy case, Democrats would be hard-pressed to oppose O'Connor in confirmation hearings. I don't know if there's anything to this or not, but if there is, there's obviously a lot of cynicism out there about the way justices might rule in order to grease future events, like nominations.
What's happening in Washington these days is almost unbelievable. If you would have told me that with a Republican president, House and Senate that the things that are happening today would be happening, I would have said you were nuts.
