LOS ANGELES - Activists seeking to oust Democratic Gov. Gray Davis said Thursday they have turned in enough signatures for a recall election.

Ted Costa, coordinator of the Republican-led signature drive, said proponents turned in just over 1 million signatures by Thursday morning. Valid signatures from 897,158 registered voters are needed for the recall to make the ballot.

In the best case, McClintock will be the sole candidate, with STRONG support from ALL other Republicans. Will Issa back down? Will Arnold? Will Riordan?

The only way I can think of to get just one strong Republican candidate is through party discipline and unity. This requires a strong leader. The only person who could possibly enforce this would be Dubya. Unfortunately, he has not paid much attention to the recall, and may even be working for the failure of the recall. Possibly there will be some involvement once the recall qualifies.

Issa has a strong claim on the spot--he is the one who put up over $1Million to get the signatures. The problem is that his background is too easy to smear. The revelations so far don't bother me too much, and his Middle East policies are irrelevant--states are not allowed to conduct foreign policy.

However, I think that the smear campaign against him would work, because too many Kalifornians think that guns are evil and his conviction for having an illegal (unregistered) pistol would be a real negative. I happen toi think he was just exercising his 2A rights and feel this is a positive thing. Elect him and Kali's guns laws may change for the better. Imagine "shall issue" in Kali.

The big question is how do we persuade him to drop out? He really feels that he is owed the chance to run for his very substantial contributions so far. The only conceivable method would be the promise of some kind of plum position in the Bush administration. I don't think that is forthcoming, so he stays in the race.

As much as I think McClintock would be the best governor, Arnold has the highest name recognition and would be the most electable candidate. McClintock may not even enter the race. The problem is going to be keeping Riordan, Simon, possibly McClintock and a host of others out. Again party discipline is the only thing that will prevent the good guys from shooting themsdelves in the foot.

Lastly I have a quesstion. If someone votes "NO" on the recall issue, do they still get to vote for a replacement in case the recall carries, or does that count as their choice?

This little question could change the equation dramatically.

I believe if they vote NO they are not supposed to vote on a candidate.

I wonder if they do if their vote will be disqualified? Kevin Shelley (from SF) is the Secreteary of State and he's doing obstructionist Florida vote scams already.

While talking to a gal at the Doctors office yesterday, she said that the fake petitions are also being mailed out.

The speed with which this recall has qualified has Democrats already nervous that the voters are about to revolt, so they're going to be wary of appearing too obstructive. We'll force this issue whether they want it or not.

In fact, we'll force this recall whether the Republican National Committee likes it or not.

I was talking to a New York City cabbie this week, a bright man from India. Asked him about Bloomberg. He said Bloomberg doesn't know how to run a city, he might know something about business. But it takes an iron will, political know-how, and I kid you not, "sometimes you have to kill people!" so says the cabbie. Sounds like NYC politics!

I doubt Arnold knows a damn thing about running government. Remember, Reagan had been involved in Hollywood politics for years and years and knew a thing or two about getting things done. Didn't he leave Calif in the red, anyway? Issa knows all about politics, but his Muslim association would worry me. McClintock is clearly the best choice, but he isn't a big name.

OK guys, what are you wanting to accomplish with this recall? This looks like a great opportunity to turn the state of CA more to the right. Find a govenor who is able to rescue the state from it financial woes, who can attract business back into the state, who can solve the energy and water crises by applying solid conservative principles.
But he would have to work with a left leaning legislature, like Bush did in Texas. The shift in the legislature will follow naturally.

Who has the business acumen and the leadership skills to pull something like this off?

Also, what people aren't saying is that the recall is only possible because of the extremely low turnout from the Davis/Simon election. Had we had a high turnout, the percent threshold for recall signatures would have been out of reach. Perhaps that should be a lesson to Democrats who strategized that damping down turnout by disgusting voters with a nasty negative campaign has a downside.

I pretty much agree with your assessment, that's why I thought that given the choices, Riordan was the best choice, because he is a businessman, but he understands politics, he was a great mayor of LA and he is electable and could tackle the California crisis successfully. He really turned LA around after years of fraud and corruption by Mayor Tom Bradley.

If Riordan had gotten the R. nomination, he would be our governor, not Davis. But the superconservatives won out, nominating Bill Simon, who didn't have a chance against Davis.

From what Riordan said in an interview with FoxNews, it sounded like he is not running this time and is supporting Schwarzenegger. Arnold is not my favorite, if I could have anybody, but I'll take him and vote for him, if he has the best chance. We critically need to get a Republican into the governor's office. The Dems have destroyed CA and are continuing to do so.
