Skimming the Surface. Morons vote too you know?
Posted on 07/03/2003 12:29:19 PM PDT by ConservativeMan55
Most people will tell you what they think on any given issue. They certainly believe their opinions matter just as much as anybody else.
If you decide to go talking like you've been working in government for 20 years then you better know what you are talking about.
Too many Americans are skimming the surface and then letting their own bias tilt them in the way that their biases percieve what theu think is reality.
Weeks before the war in Iraq started I had a conversation with a man who is 27 years old. Thats 6 years older than me if you are counting. We began to talk about the news of the day. The coversation soon shifted to Bill Clinton and whether or not he was still popular.
Lets call the man Bob. Bob proclaimed to me that if an election were held on that day that Bill Clinton would beat George W. Bush. As a Conservative I was of course flabbergasted but I didn't let my own bias influence me. I simply stated why I thought his conclusion was wrong.
He began to tell me that Bill Clinton was extremely popular and that the economy was good during Clinton's time in office. He told me I was crazy and that as soon as Clinton left office that things went downhill.
I began to try and counter his 'surface skimming' with actual real hard facts. For instance. The only reason I believe Bill Clinton was elected in 1992 was because the country was making a seismic shift to the right that probably started earlier than 1992.
Clinton came in and claimed that he was a 'new democrat' and that he would appeal to everyone. 2 years later in 1994 the Republicans took over the house for I believe the first time in 40 years. The economy began to pick up and the budget was balanced.
Within two years from 1994 to 1996 nothing got worse. Things only got better. They got 'more conservative' Clinton was reelected only because a sloppy Bob Dole was put up against Clinton who was at the time taking credit for a combination of Reagan tax cuts and a Republican balanced budget.
In 1998 the Clinton scandal broke. In 2000 Gore who I might add was a sitting Vice President with a strong but faltering economy could not beat George W. Bush.
Then in 2002 Republicans swept the Democrats clean off the map. Now we control just about everything in Washington.
When I asked my friend to refute anything I had just told him he thought I was joking and didn't even know we had an election in 2002! This my friends, is skimming the surface. We as Conservatives should take the job of educators and then we will get more things done in Washington. Convert more Conservatives. Don't try to appeal to those who don't know what they are talking about to gain votes. Expand the knowledge base rather than expanding the fatty part.

"Expand the knowledge base rather than expanding the fatty part."
I was watching the end of some dumb game show the other night (dog eat dog I think). A contestant was asked a question about politics. The question which I cant remember exactly, went something like this:
Q: What former Republican Speaker of the House helped define/compose the GOP led "Contract With America" .
A: Al Gore

Isn't that how the Roman empire fell, decay and apathy from within and a complete loss of morality. "occupy the public with frivilous games and then we can do whatever we want" (paraphrased) Since most Americans can name all the stats of their favorite and least favorite sports stars, but can't tell you who the vice president or their own congressman is, we are there now!!

You should encourage the moron to write-in Bill Clinton in 2004. He might even do it, assuming he can write.
Did you ask him if his parents voted for Buchanan in 2000? Oops....

Good essay for one so young if I may say so.
Heard today that when taking a test on our nation, one of the questions was who were our allies in WW2, something like 50% answered, Italy, Germany, and Japan. These people are voting age.

at the risk of starting something that will hyjack the thread, which I don't want to do, I'll just say that's not what happened to the Roman Empire and good-bye.

Ask "Bob" how he feels about the Germans attacking Pearl Harbor. Bet he's still outraged.

For more than 30 years society has striven to "idiot proof" everything. Now we have a surfeit of idiots.

I would like to make two points as to where I disagree with the writer.
One, Bush #1 lost to Clinton because of the promise he made not to raise taxes and enough hardheaded people like myself voted for Ross Periot. We chose because we determined our President lied to us and we not only put a bigger liar in the Whitehouse, we put two of them there.
Secondly as to the Republicans controlling DC I say to you the Republicans couldnt control Congress if they were 75% in both houses because they do not have the guts to stand and fight. Case in point, a minority of the Democrat Party have the ba$$s to not even allow their own members to vote on judgeships and the Republicans wont force the issue.
I say to all of you Congress divides this country and conquers us,while stealing us blind and rewarding those who keep them there at the expense of 90% of America and we are too damn dumb to see it.

I'm just an average working guy with a tech school education. I can't count the number of times I've had to explain to so-called "intelligent" people how the electoral college works, in response to "We didn't elect Bush" diatribes.
