Thanks for this post and the ping.
You nailed it re the so call credibility of the NY Slimes with this reply of yours: "The Times wants the story to go away, so it can go back to its old, corrupt ways."
There has been no changes at the NY Slimes. They will continue their 7 decade tradition of lying to Americans and honoring the truly evil of the world like Fidel, $oddomite and any communist despot alive or dead.

My pleasure. Another FReeper posted an article a few weeks ago, showing that the
Times's circulation has gone down slightly over the past year, while the
New York Post's shot up. While it's doubtful that the people are jumping directly from the propaganda sheet to the
Post, the numbers show that the dip is not across the board. (IOW, not because people are souring on ALL newspapers.) Little by little, people are souring on the
Times.
The biggest thing the Times has going for it, is not folks' belief in its credibility, but rather their notion of its social cache. A great many people believe in the supersition that reading the Times somehow attests to their degree of sophistication and civilization, independent of the paper's degree of truthfulness.

I haven't seen any recent circulation data, and it is probably too early for real data.
However, in the first quarter, the NY Slimes was down over 5 % in circulation.

Average weekday circulation of the nation's 20 biggest newspapers for the six months ended March 31, as reported by the Audit Bureau of Circulations. The percentage changes are from the same period a year ago.
1. USA Today, 2,250,474, up 1.8 percent
2. The Wall Street Journal, 1,820,600, unchanged
3. The New York Times, 1,130,740, down 5.3 percent
4. Los Angeles Times, 979,549, down 0.6 percent (a)
5. The Washington Post, 796,367, down 1.9 percent
This recent mess will eventually cut into their circulation. Hopefully the drop in their ad $'s that they blamed on the Iraqi War will continue.
