The Bush administration and the U.S. intelligence community have had some success in finding Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction, Sen. Pat Roberts said Thursday.
Roberts, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, told reporters on a telephone conference call that he couldn't go into detail because the news is classified.
``It's classified information now _ I am urging the administration and the intelligence community to make at least portions of that public,'' Roberts said. ``We've had some success; I'm sorry I can't go into detail about that.''
Roberts, R-Kan., traveled this week to Iraq and the Middle East with members of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

What we'll hear from the dems is, "Sure he had WMD. We never said he didn't. In fact, we always acknowledged that Saddam Hussein had WMD. But he didn't actually use them against us.

Don't look now, but the paleo-cons and the Left may be in for a rude surprise.
What does Bill Gertz know, and when will the Washington Times publish it?

What does Bill Gertz know, and when will the Washington Times publish it? Good point. :-) I'm just going to wait and see if there's even anything here. If they did find something significant, the Administration will not be able to sit on this long at all. There are too many military personnel issuing situation reports and the like, plus too many reporters and Iraqis running around.

If it were bad news for the administration, it would be leaking like a sieve all over the media.
If it is good news for the administration, it will be spun into a non-story.

Color me skeptical, I have heard this "we found them and we are just letting everyone bash us to make the look worse" arguement before, but then there are still not weapons. What is the logic in purposefully letting this drag out so long, I don't see it.
To: Pokey78
Either this was a planned leak, or Roberts shouldn't have said a thing.

If in fact our forces have found something substantial, we're talking about stuff that has the capability of killing thousands, hundreds of thousands, or possibly even millions of people. This isn't just some political game that's going on here, this is deadly serious business. People in this country have already been killed by anthrax. Divulging too much information before we're ready could actually do more harm than good in the national security arena. I know the media wants to sell newspapers and get the highest ratings, but the best thing for everyone to do is to just remain patient. I have faith in this administration to do the right thing in this arena.

I read
this story in the Lost Wages Sun, and did not come away with the same sensationalist spin that Drudge did.
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration and the U.S. intelligence community have had some success in finding Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee said Thursday. Sen. Pat Roberts told reporters on a telephone conference call that he couldn't go into detail because the news is classified.
"It's classified information now - I am urging the administration and the intelligence community to make at least portions of that public," the Kansas Republican said. "We've had some success; I'm sorry I can't go into detail about that."
Roberts traveled this week to Iraq and the Middle East with members of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
When Congress returns from its Fourth of July holiday recess next week, Roberts will continue Intelligence Committee hearings into prewar intelligence on Iraq's weapons program and whether the Bush administration manipulated the information.
At issue is the administration's failure, so far, to find the Iraqi weapons. Roberts, already a staunch defender of the U.S. intelligence community, defended the White House.
"It's going to take some time to uncover Saddam Hussein's weapons programs, and let me emphasize the term `programs'," Roberts said. "This was a program designed to be hidden, hidden by people who knew what their fate would be if they revealed it."
"You can't dig up every rosebush in Iraq," Roberts added. "We need people who are familiar with the program to show us where they are hidden."
Some success does not sound like there is a major story about to break. More like they have found more components (but not WMD) but cannot say exactly what quite yet without endangering civilian sources.
As a matter of fact, it sounds to me like Roberts is trying to manage expectations downward, not trumpet that "we've got the goods".

What is the logic in purposefully letting this drag out so long, I don't see it. The logic in it is this. Wait to release the information and let the left and the reactionary nutjobs go into hysterics claiming that Bush "willfully lied."
After they are all on record as making these wild accusations, bring the hammer down--irrefutable proof of WMDs.
Bush is going for the jugular by destroying whatever credibility the democrats had left.
