Anthrax Suspect Trained U.S. Team on Bioweapons FBI Case Agents Angered
The Washington Post ^ | Thursday, July 3, 2003 | By Marilyn W. Thompson

"Months after Steven J. Hatfill came under FBI scrutiny in the anthrax investigation and lost his government security clearance, he played an important role in training U.S. intelligence agents and Special Forces for covert missions abroad to search for weapons of mass destruction and was involved in planning security at the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan, according to documents and interviews with government officials and Hatfill's associates.

Hatfill trained an elite team from the Defense Intelligence Agency on ways to search for biological weapons, worked on secret projects with the Army's Delta Force and sat in on at least one State Department meeting on embassy security in postwar Afghanistan, according to the sources and documents. He secured letters of commendation for his work from officials at the DIA, which gathers military intelligence, and the State Department, which was trying to add protections to safeguard U.S. diplomats.

The disclosure of Hatfill's work on secret bioweapons projects casts new light on the government's investigation of the 2001 anthrax attacks, which killed five people and sickened 17 others. Hatfill, 49, has been labeled a "person of interest" in the anthrax case by Attorney General John D. Ashcroft, though the scientist and his supporters have strenuously denied that he had any involvement in the case............"

"But other sources said the Pentagon's insistence on using Hatfill as an instructor even as the FBI intensified its investigation of him angered and puzzled some agents on the case."

Correction to heading: (FBI Agents Angered) is separate from heading and should be in parentheses for accuracy.

It makes me wonder if the Bush administration believes in the old adage:

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.

I saw a report on this today.  Hatfill's friend came on the phone to talk to the interviewer.  Here are some of the details.

Hatfill allowed the FBI to search his home.
Hatfill granted full interviews with the FBI.
Hatfill gave blood on three occassions.
Hatfill took lie detector test(s).

I don't think these items were granted under warrant.  I believe Hatfill cooperated with officials.

If so, I'm not sure what else he could do.

Perhaps we'll find out he is guilty, but it sure looks strange.  They've slandered the guy up one side and down the other.

I'm sure we don't know half of this story, but living in ATL, Rick Jewel keeps coming to mind.

This is a circus like the Richard Jewel investigation after the Atlanta bombings. The Feds are clueless, and are looking for a scapegoat to hide their incompetence.

If I were Hatfield, I'd start suing.

It seems the FBI has to slander this guy occasionally to cover their R. Jewell-like treatment of him, but they only dig the hole deeper, and set themselves up. Anyone with half a brain could see that those letters were sent by operators tied to the 9/11 attacks. It's just too coincidental. And we KNOW Iraq was producing weaponized anthrax. Sometimes you dont need a thousand gumshoes to connect the dots...

Perhaps not this guy, but my professional analysis of those letters, the way they were addressed, etc. was that it was a 'domestic job', i.e. an American citizen, born here, who was purposely making it look like foreigners (especially Middle Easterners) had addressed the anthrax letters. Just my two cents.

The return address contains the google.com search elements you need to get to a website that references a myriad of information sites produced by a group in the Detroit suburbs. Try GREEN GREEN SCHOOL, "school" being the standard reference for "AlQaida" as used in many "AlQaida" internet communications. "green", of course, is the favorite Islamic color.

This standard AlQaida operative reference was likely begun in the early days of the net and it's likely simply searching for "green school" worked to get a handful of references at the start. Then, as the net grew, they had to go to "green green school". As it grew more you got things of relevance to the terrorists' lives in the USA, e.g. "greensboro", where so many of them went to school, and then "greendale", the neighborhood where so many of them lived as they went to graduate school in the Raleigh, NC area.

The whole idea of using google.com to search for a reference already on the net would be to throw off investigator suspicions. For example, if you were a terrorist working inside the US you'd do a search for the website with all of the travel, lodging and education information at sites you were looking at. Then, all you would need to do after that was point and click to get to what you needed to do your job, e.g. go to a school to sign up for 747 flight training, rent a crop duster, buy envelopes, rent a room, rent a car, etc. You might even find mailing lists of celebrities and important government officials who might become your targets.

At the same time you would not be typing anything other than "green green school" into the address line on your browser, so an investigator checking out a public library computer would not know what you were really looking at.

One of the sites you get to has about 286 additional sites popping up with it if you use only "greensboro greendale school". Intriguingly if you add "brokaw" to your google.com search you get only two responses!

It doesn't matter what order you do the search, you will always get to "http://www.beachcomber.com/Inland/Search/yellow.html" and "http://www.mindspring.com/~digiulio/address_list.pdf".

The "beachcomber" site might well explain why all the AlQaida targeting was done in the Eastern United States and not the West. This site focuses on the East. Try looking up Washington DC and Adult Education in this site. You should pretty quickly discover a flight training school at 1200 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Why a site ostensibly focused on vacation information would have a flight training school reference is a good question. That it is but 4 blocks from the White House is another!

There are other equally mysterious references in that site. Check out the restaurant coupon selling references and see who provided the software for all of this.

BTW, the owner of the initial site "www.beachcomber.com" may well be totally innocent of this possible use.

Anyway, this looks like the work of foreign operatives familiar with the USA and not at all the work of American rogue scientists.

Remember, this is based on elements in the return addresses on the anthrax envelopes.

Hatfill did it, in my opinion. His second news conference said it all.

Hatfill did it, in my opinion. His second news conference said it all.

Who helped him? Who mailed the September 20th shadow letters (anthrax-negative powder with cryptic, block letter threats) out of Florida to some of the same media targets as those of the September 18th anthrax mailer out of New Jersey?

Where is the evidence that the AMI anthrax letter came from New Jersey?

Did Hatfill mail the Chilean anthrax letter, which was of a different strain, sent from New York with a Florida return address in October of 2001?

I've yet to see a Hatfill theory that answers any of these questions, or even acknowledges them.

BTW, have the remains of the Flight 93 hijackers been tested for anthrax exposure? One of those hijackers, Ahmad Ibrahim A. Al Haznawi, was treated in the Summer of 2001 for a black, cutaneous lesion on his leg, which his physician now believes was anthrax.

I think I am starting to figure out why the FBI keeps "investigating" and accusing Hatfill. Apparently, that alone does make some people believe in his guilt, which is the idea. I guess this is easier than to find the real anthrax killer.

If they don't convict him he will own them. I believe they did Hatfill a very bad deed.
Sounds like Mr Win Ho Lee from Los Alamos.
