That was my thought. After all, these aren't individuals on their own in this particular scenario. They are "cargo" of smugglers who would handle the documents and tickets:

Maybe some have seen illegals with enough money to fly or to pay someone to smuggle them in by air, but I've seen hundreds cross the border and I've yet to see one who appeared to have enough money to buy a taco, much less an airline ticket.
As far as their future employers paying for their ticket, what employer is going to invest that much money in an illegal he's never seen?

Yes, they know it. We find all sorts of documentation, to include matriculas consulares. I guess that shows how valuable those cards really are.
