My question is how many Americans see themselves as Montanans, Californians, Kansans, before they see themselves as Americans? Do people value their states' rights above their American rights? Is the identity at the state level greater than that at the national level?

I think most people support our US Constitution over their states version.
They should, as it is the 'supreme Law of the Land', a social contract that cannot be broken by a mere majority of our neighbors.

IE, CA has passed a prohibition on 'assault weapons' that violates our RKBA's.
I still live here, ignoring this outrageous 'law', confident that it will be overturned by the USSC.
The court is not stupid, and in the end they will strike down this 'silly' CA law, just as they struck down a silly Texas law last week. Bet on it.

I see your point. I just often wonder if the "states rights" argument isn't a misnomer. It isn't that the people want to break away from the US, and only claim to be Californians. It's that people want the US to uphold the fact that Californians can decide what laws are applicable to them.

The court is not stupid,

LOL!

You would never know that from the statements made the past few days.

I think the court in their way did what they felt was the right thing to do, but they have indeed upset the apple cart.

I applaud the court for getting government out of the bedroom, but we gave up a states right to make law limiting what many believe to be a immoral relationship.

But is it not the case that all decisions do the same.

Some want to have a constitutional amendment on marriage yet do we not take that away from the state as well? Each time we ask the federal government to take on a responsibility, we take it away from the state to do or not to do. This has been going on for many years. Decades in fact.

Can it be stopped? Reversed?

Yes, I believe it can but not in my lifetime. A steady pressure on the rudder will eventually turn the ship of state. But, it will take as long as it took for the pendulum to swing in the direction it is going now and some major government failure will likely be required to do it any sooner than that.

Some here on the forum have been quite critical of me lately and view some of my thoughts as RINO, CINO and even liberal, but what is needed takes a very long time to accomplish and cannot be done in days, weeks or even years. It takes a social awakening. Whole societies awaken slowly and I believe that is happening as we speak. But the time will be generations long to see the results. I just don't get too excited, waiting for the outcome. I just keep plugging along and advise my kids to advise theirs. In the mean time, we do have a life to lead.
