From the commentary today on "Realclearpolitics.com" --

Despite the disagreements many of the narrowly-focused constituencies on the right have with President Bush, there seems to be an overall appreciation of his character, integrity, and his unwavering commitment to U.S. national security. There also seems to be an understanding that Bush, like Reagan, is helping to facilitate a continued shift toward conservatism in U.S. public opinion.

Today, many conservatives say, American public opinion is shifting their way, so there is no reason to be impatient — or to pressure Mr. Bush into doing things before the election that might hurt him next year.

"The Republicans are looking at decades of dominance in the House and the Senate, and having the presidency with some regularity," Mr. Norquist said. "So if this year the tax cut isn't the one we wanted — no biggie. There's a sense that we can afford to wait."

This tolerance of Bush only runs so deep, of course, and if the economy doesn't enjoy a robust recovery the President can't afford to have conservative groups sitting on their hands next November.

Meanwhile, the upside for conservative groups in the coming election is bigger than ever: if the economy does spring back to life and conservatives come out en masse for the President, it could produce a landslide victory and an historic mandate for Bush and his conservative agenda.

Bush is the perfect politician. I don't understand why there are so many diehard Bush supporters from those calling themselves conservatives. He trys so hard to pander to socialist causes that he might as well run for the democratic ticket or start his own party. BSP: Bush Socialist Party. With few exeptions he is a Socialist. Tax cuts for those who don't pay taxes, billions for Aids aid in africa, tacit support of Affirmative action, a nation wide "security" force, world record goverment expendature increases, stuff under the rug tax cuts, perscription drug entitlements, wars of unprovoked "liberation", suggestions of global policing, approval of "assult" weapon bans.

Now you can compile a list of conservative things that Bush has done as to rebuff my charge.

"Depending on where you go and in what circles you travel, conservatives are livid with the Bush administration."

No, conservatives aren't "livid".

Just take a peak at Bush's fundraising. You don't pull in that kind of money if your base is unhappy.

A few idealistic critics don't make a "conservative" groundswell of opposition, though the Democrats, Greens, and Libertarians would certainly hope that we were all so divided and engaged in fratricide.

Bush will outfundraise the next two Presidential candidates of *any* two election years combined.

Bush will win in 2004 in a large, decisive way, even though the same "conservative" critics will still be repeating over and over "remember 1992" and other such worthless platitudes.

Also, the Libertarians on Free Republic have become so repetitive, tiresome, wrong, and distracting that they should be banned.

We've all heard the same Bush-bashing arguments. Either get some new ones or go away.

The story continues to suggest that Bush is telling DeLay to go ahead and stop what he’s trying to do - on purpose. The idea being that Bush can thus claim credit for supporting whatever measure, while DeLay and other conservatives can point to victory for blocking its ultimate passage.

Triangulation so vastly superior to those amatures the Toe Sucker and The Impeached Bent One.

Looks like I need to post this again:

As for the House plan, those that have attacked it should instead support it, as it promotes conservative ideals.

"One key difference is that the House bill would go further in reforming Medicare, forcing traditional Medicare to compete directly against the private plans starting in 2010."

We have to make sure this survives conference or the status quo is retained.

I was hoping that was the deal with pills for granny stuff. There was absolutely no reason to strong arm the Republicans who could have killed it. Those who wanted it would have appreciated the effort and conservatives would have shrugged.

Since I am too lazy to read through 314 posts, here is my 2 cents:

I think the narrow victory in the house was planned, for different reasons for different people, but I think for Bush it was to be able to absorb some of the more conservative approaches the House had in their version. He wants to appease to the conservatives while appeasing the liberals. Is this right? No. Does it work? We shall see.

My husband says if I run for political office, which I want to do, I will quickly become jaded and cynical, and although I may have altuistic reasons for running, they (politicians) all do, and it would be no different for me.

I don't think so.

Defense, courts, law-enforcement. Not much more. Someone needs to raise a stink, right?

I am correct again Rush has confirmed this AP story is BS.

Principaled conservatives are standing up to Bush over medicare drug bill. They have told Bush they will not support him on this matter.
