New York Republicans close to Gov. George Pataki have approached Manhattan businesswoman Georgette Mosbacher, ex-wife of former Secretary of Commerce Robert Mosbacher, as a possible candidate against Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer next year.
The approach came to light when Mosbacher contacted friends for help in framing her response. While active in Republican fund-raising, Mosbacher has never been a candidate or held public office. With her net worth estimated at more than $250 million, she might be able to finance her own campaign.
Mosbacher's last political activity was in 2000 when she endorsed Sen. John McCain for the Republican nomination. Her former husband is a longtime family friend of the Bushes.

Even a McCainiac would be prefferable to UpChuck, hope she runs because this would make yet Another seat the Democrats will have to defend using increasingly limited DNC resources.

Mosbacher's stepson Rob ran for mayor of Houston in the 1990s and was nearly elected. He even sought the U.S. Senate Republican nomination in 1984, losing out to Phil Gramm.

Isn't Georgette Mosbacher the Pamela Harriman of the Republican Party?

hard to believe that this is the best name out there. What about Rudy Giuliani? Not right-wing enough for a lot of people here, I know, but he might actually win, whereas Mosbacher would not have a chance.

Another seat the Democrats will have to defend using increasingly limited DNC resources. Well, Schumer has truckloads of money all to himself, like $16 million. And now Mosbacher is said to be leaning against running. I think she'd be a great candidate if she'd self-finance. Wouldn't expect her to win, but she'd be respectable.

Well, since everyone but Giuliani in the New York GOP is a Dud, I say, let's run her and see what happens.

"is she the lone candidate?"
Yep (i'd rather Rudy defeat Hitlery in 06, and Rudy isn't running in 04.)

Michael Benjamin, a young conservative, is running but . . .
NYers are pretty hard up for a well-funded candidate to run.

Lots of $s but no beef like Guiliani has.
Schumer has, can, and will to anything to be re-elected to the US Senate again.
While in the NY state legistlature he illegally used his NY taxpayer paid office space, equipment, staff, and worktime to campaign for the US House of Representatives.
It was investigated afterwards and he skated.
While in the US House of Representatives he asked for a received illegal amounts and spent large amounts over legal minimums in his election run to step up to the US Senate.
It was investigated afterwards and he skated.
Hillary and her campaign goons savaged Guiliani when he initially started his US Senate run against her before he dropped out. That went after Rudy and his girl friend as he was still married.
Chucky will do the same and worse to Georgette Mosbacher.
Rudy too will be savaged, but he is bulletproof now since 9-11 and his recent marriage.
Like in the CA Governor's race, we need winners to run, not just warm bodies, money, and good intentions.

I'd much rather see Rudy go against Chuckie in '04 and Pataki take on The Shrew in '06. But doesn't look like Rudy's going to cooperate with my grand scheme.

"Pataki take on The Shrew"
Stinki George Patinki is much too unpopular to defeat Hillary.
Only Rudy could defeat her.

warm bodies, money, and good intentions New York will be lucky to get even that. One out of three they can swing at this point.

What about Rudy Giuliani? Not right-wing enough for a lot of people here, I know, but he might actually win, whereas Mosbacher would not have a chance. Rudi is gonna be boss or nothing. He would be a great governor but a crappy Senator, more trouble than John McCain.
The Mossbacher 'Glam' might sell in NY and wouldn't she make a great contrast to Hillary.

Yeah but our front bench in NY begins and ends with Rudy, who isn't running this year.
Mosbacher at least can raise and spend tons and tons of cash.
I don't see why we shouldn't run her - we've got nothing to loose!
