Business and Labor Leaders Call on President to Halt Recall Effort
Five prominent business and labor leaders called on President Bush to stop the Republican-led effort to recall Democratic Governor Gray Davis. The bipartisan group made the plea in an opinion piece published in Sunday's Los Angeles Times.
The signers included Los Angeles developer and investor Eli Broad, Silicon Valley venture capitalist John Doerr, investment firm chairman Warren Hellman, California Federation of Labor head Art Pulaski and Arthur Rock, one of the founders of Intel.
The Times piece contended that the recall effort threatens to plunge a state already reeling from a gigantic budget deficit even deeper into chaos. "The president should demand an end to the recall effort because the nation cannot afford to have California's economy remain stuck in reverse," it said, in part.
The piece went on to claim that the recall is supported by a "narrow wing" of the Republican president's own party.
President Bush did not mention the recall effort when he was fund-raising in California on Friday. White House spokeswoman Ashley Snee on Sunday said the recall effort is a California matter and the White House is not involved.
Recall supporters must collect 897,158 valid signatures by September 2 to put to a statewide vote whether to remove or retain Davis as governor. As of last week, they had turned in 376,008, according to the California Secretary of State.

Any idea which of the five are Republican and if they supported President Bush in 2000?

Bush can't call this off. What do they want him to do? Write an executive order?

If they want an executive order, they should go to Gephardt.

Always love how the media says bi-partisan but when I went to see business leaders that supported Bush in 2000, I couldn't find any of these names unless I missed them when skimming through the list!

"The president should demand an end to the recall effort because the nation cannot afford to have California's economy remain stuck in reverse," it said, in part. And just how did it get into reverse in the first place? The people running the place put it there, that's how. The same ones these bozos want to keep in office. Someone ask these morons how Gray Davis' magnificent presence is helping the situation.

What "narrow wing" of the republican party is 800,000 plus wide? That is one mighty big "narrow wing"!
If I had been a fence sitter in Kalifornia, this article and bitch slap of the 400,000 who already signed the petition would have been enough to make me sign!
Sometimes you've gotta start all over again. That means tough times are ahead for the trough feeders who will bitch the loudest. Which is a good thing.......

Best I can tell after running each of their names through
OpenSecrets they are all Dem donors, except for an occaisonal contribution to RINO Specter.

"Bush can't call this off. What do they want him to do? Write an executive order?" Don't these captains of industry know anything about the Constitution? They may as well ask Jacques Chirac to fix it.

These are apparently successful people who think it is a useful idea to spend coffee money (in terms of their wallets) for a totally useless ad. 1) It ain't the business of the President to tell the leaders of any petition in California to knock it off. 2) Even if the President was stupid enough to do that, they wouldn't listen, because they don't have to. 3) The driving force behind the recall is that Davis is a sleazy, lying, incompetent, and nothing that anyone says will change that obvious fact. So how come these so-called leaders are so all-fired dumb?
