NEW DELHI: With Sino-India ties on an upswing, especially after Prime Minister Vajpayee's "successful" visit to China, the two countries now plan to hold the first-ever joint exercise between their navies later this year.
Navy vice-chief Vice Admiral John DeSilva, speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony to flag in a naval mountaineering expedition on Friday, said a three-day search and rescue exercise was being planned in which warships from the two countries would take part...
In recent months, India has commenced "some cooperation" with the Chinese People's Liberation Army. With the thaw in relations, for instance, Indian and Chinese warships have been exchanging port calls with each other. There has also been some officer-level exchanges in each other's military institutions.

FYI...interesting announcement/news. Although a relatively mionor exercise, it is major development that the two historically adversarial nations are drawing closer together. One we will not particularly like at all.
It's a factual occuranc right out of the pages of the fictional Dragon's Fury Series of novels.
I thought those following the novel series might have some interest in this development.
Best Fregards.

You think this is a big deal? Unusual and a little surprising, but it's the American consumer who's made the PLA what it is today.
To: swarthyguy
Not a big deal...just an interesting development, one with potentially troubling overtones.
... and I agree completely, it is the American consumer who has been taken in lock stock and barrel by the PRC, along with our economic community and most of our politicians. It does not lead to a good place.
That's the entire point of the Draogn's Fury Series
Best Fregards.

Indian forces still wary of China NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Vajpayee's visit to China might have ushered in a new upward trajectory in bilateral ties but the Indian armed forces continue to keep a watchful - and concerned eye - on the Red Dragon's rapid modernisation of its air, naval and ground forces.
Army officers feel that while upswing in ties is a welcome development, India cannot afford to slacken its vigil on the eastern front.
"Our military strategy revolves around maintaining a strategic balance on both fronts... ensuring 'credible deterrence' against Pakistan and 'affordable deterrence' against China," said an Army officer.
The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), spurred by a double-digit hike in its budget for the 14th straight year, is galloping ahead with its modernisation programmes.
These range from inducting solid-fuel mobile Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) like the 8,000-km-range 'DF-31' to undertaking new-generation fighter aircraft production projects.
The defence ministry has said, "Every major Indian city is within the reach of Chinese missiles and this capability is being further augmented to include submarine-launched ballistic missiles."

Exactly, they are very wary...but they are also reaching out somewhat...and that is mainly because (IMHO) the U.S. has been so amiss in developing what should otherwise be a natural, much closer relationship between ourselves and India.
We have been too focused on Pakistan, which is a hive of terror, and on China, who is our ideological foe.
We drove India to get a lot of military h/w from the Russians...we'd best wake up and not drive them to the PRC.
Thanks for the article.

Good. A great opportunity for us to obtain free training services for our fast attack submarines, and a great chance to update the two orders of battle.

usual noise when leaders visit, nothing serious. Indians mistrust the chinese even more than they do the Pakistanis. china is a growing economic power and Indians are good businessmen.

Perhaps, considering the closeness between the US Sixth Fleet and the Indian Navy in the Molucca Straits, in particular, there will a US Naval observer on board the Indian ships.

What I see happening is a diabolical plan to keep the ONE thing that would frustrate Axis plans from happening, namely, India's increasing distancing of Russia and adoption of the US - UK et al alliance as her primary partner. It's as if Vijpayee has been bitten by the same bug which caused George W. Bush to look into Vladimir Putin's eyes and see a soul, real or imagined. I believe most of the impetus for this seeming Sino - Indian thaw came, SIGNIFICANTLY, from the Chinese side. Meanwhile, Pakistan have undertaken a new effort to further "befriend" the US. Anything to keep the US and India apart. Of course, once India has served her purpose for the Axis, she'll be stabbed in the back and then discarded.

Ever notice how many Indian officials have names like this "John DeSilva"? Sure are a lot of Indian Christians in high places.
