BRISBANE, Australia (CNN) -- Imagine a gun that fires a million rounds a minute -- enough to shred a target in a blink of an eye, or throw up a defensive wall against an incoming missile.

This is Metal Storm, a weapons system that forsakes old-style mechanics for the speed of electronics.

It can even be programmed not to fire within, say, the grounds of a school.

Now what is this statement doing in here?...........

Hey td. This has been posted a few dozen times, but you can be forgiven, cuz the search-engine didn't show any of the iterations of the article when I searched.

But, yeah, I heard of this invention sometime last year. They even have some really neat videos of the device operating at various speeds.

Get it quick as you may be certain it will banned as soon as it practical.

The Metal Storm handgun employs electronic locking, which can limit firing access and stop unauthorized use. It can even be programmed not to fire within, say, the grounds of a school.

Ah yes, good old reliable electronics.

Yeah, but the stinkin' Feds will probably make the civilian model limited to a 500,000 round capacity.

Ok, so that'd still be pretty sweet.

It already falls in the category of machine guns.

Go here for videos, descriptions, et. al.

I have seen this before. The way the gun works is to stack the bullets and propellant (encased in disintegrating paper or substance) in the barrel and to fire them electronically.

You are limited to the number of barrels times the number of bullets and then you have to reload. So 10 barrels times 10 bullets equals 100 bullets downrange. Yes, you can send them downrange in 1/100,000 of a second, but so what? Now you have to reload.

This limitation is what makes the motorized Gatlin gun much mor practical and desireable.

As I remember from previous articles this does not fire "(1 million rounds per minute)." It fires a few rounds at the rate of a million rounds per minute. Previous articles had the same hype. I think these guys have a persistent PR firm working for them.

I was wondering about that little detail. 1 million rounds/minute is impressive, but I'd hate to have to pack that ammo into the field.
