Clara Harris got 20 years for running over her husband 4 or 5 times.

AP says "Jurors deliberated less than two hours in the case of Chante Jawan Mallard, 27, who faces life in prison on the conviction", so I'm thinking 1st degree

Go Texas!! If this case had been tried in DeeCee, "Whitey" would have been charged and convicted of breaking and enetering and leaving the scene of an accident....

Yeah, everyone loves Texas today but tomorrow is another day. In California they'd probably be serving her green tea with a medicinal joint and claim no-fault since he was probably jaywalking anyway.

Putting him in a closed garage, where there would be no way he would be able to attract help, and slowly watching him die over hours, and then disposing of the body, is sufficient premeditation. She may not have intended to hit him, but without question she intended for him to die after she hit him

Wow!  Steve Breen is great at juxtaposing multiple topics in a single cartoon.

How about life? I can't understand "panic" as a defense for leaving a guy impailed upon your car in your garage, bleeding to death.

I agree. For her to decide if he might make it or not, is not her call to make. Just by doing that alone, she put his life in her hands. (I think she wanted to make sure he died though).

Last night, one of the liberal defense-attorney-type talking heads said something like, "Well, it's a Texas jury, and you know what that means, they're going to be tough." Being a Texan, I thought, "That's right....don't come to Texas and screw up." I think she meant it as a negative statement about Texans, but it made me proud.

I agree that the original accident was probably not intentional and I, too, can understand panic. Even though it's wrong, sometimes your first reaction is to not want to get caught doing something awful.

HOWEVER, those of us who came equipped with a conscience would come to our senses and realize that another human being mustn't die to just so that we can hide our shame. I would venture that the vast majority of us (not just FReepers, all humans) would somehow help this poor man.

Chante is some kind of cold-hearted creature and we are all better off that she is going to be locked up for a good, long time. (Think of the damage she could do just by passing on her genes!)

Plus, she was apparently caught because she talked about this incident at a party and one of the party-goers called the police with a tip. What kind of a psycho is she that she would think that this story is appropriate cocktail-hour conversation?

There are some crazy, scary people in the world.

She got an under the influence of extreme emotion or some such break. The defense was asking for no time and probation.

Personally, I find any cartoon in any context at all about this murder to be OFFENSIVE in the extreme.

I'm not an attorney, but to me the jury didn't take time to fully review the facts of the case before rendering a verdict. That's grounds for an appeal.

I agree the bitch is guilty, but any attorney can make the case that these jurors formed an opinion in advance.

The theory last night on TV was that the party conversation came around to a "We hate Whitey" or "Whitey is so stupid because" moment, and she kind of went overboard in contributing to the conversation.

I think they should put her through a windshield, place it in a mall, and have people walk by and tell her they're sorry.

I hate to say it (mostly because I just don't WANT to believe that people are like that), but that's likely a true accounting.

When I was on a jury once, (in Texas), we started out by taking a poll on verdict, and we only planned to review the facts IF the verdict wasn't unanimous.....why waste taxpayer money, etc., delaying a verdict, if it starts out unanimous....I mean all of the jury's been sitting in the trial for the duration....

< Sentencing at 3 this afternoon.
Damn, I love Texas!

i turned the tv on for a second and saw the verdict. i had to wake up my son to tell him how much i loved texas! (he appreciated that) : )

a 3 pm sentencing after such a quick verdict is just icing on the cake.

those texans don't play!
