FBI seeking all Makarov replacement barrels
The FBI is conducting a nationwide campaign to seize, and ballistically fingerprint, all Makarov 9 mm replacement barrels manufactured by Federal Arms Corp.
Anyone who has purchased a barrel from FAC may receive a call from the FBI, asking that they "voluntarily" surrender the gun and the barrel so the FBI can fire two rounds through it to take a ballistic fingerprint.
This appears to be part of the investigation into the homicide of Thomas Wales, an Assistant U.S. Attorney who was murdered in his Seattle, WA home in October, 2001. Wales was also involved in Washington CeaseFire, a gun control group. Apparently, ballistics from his homicide indicate that the fatal rounds were fired from a Makarov replacement barrel.
If you are contacted by the FBI regarding your Makarov replacment barrel, contact an attorney IMMEDIATELY before you talk to them or before you surrender your barrels to them.
The source may be reliable, but all too often things can get blown out of proportion. In this case "all" may actually be "a few". I would want to see this from an official source before getting my panties in a bunch.
But no matter what, if I got a call from the FBI, or anyone else, for that matter, asking me to submit one or more of my guns for criminal tests, you better damn well believe I would be on the phone with one or more lawyers and a bunch of officials in my jurisdiction from the sheriff to the dogcatcher to make sure it was legit, and also to make sure that proper oversight and legal procedures were followed to the letter.
I am not the type to do anything like that quietly or without a solid paper trail.
Did you mark the barrels in any way to insure that the ones you get back are the ones they took?
Sophisticated scientific mumbojammery which no one outside the government could possibly understand, indicates that the vic was shot by the perp using a Makarov with a Fedarmco barrel. No doubt about it.
Now by getting every available Mak barrel made by Fedarmco, and using the same mumbojammery to "fingerprint" them, our government servants will build a database of those who did NOT do it. Since, brilliant forensic psycho-warriors that they are, they know that the perp is unlikely to turn his Mak Fedarmco replacement barrel in, all they have to do is interrogate everyone else. What don't you get?
They will then carefully eliminate innocent suspects until the crazed caucasian militia-fanatic lone gunman is isolated by this process of elimination and drives his white van with the ladder on the roof rack to the Smokies, where he will be surrounded in a cave by ATF agents.
I had feared that when PC Moose, Ph.D, resigned to pursue literature, this sort of straight-forward logical law-enforcement would be lost to us. Not so. Moose lives on in spirit in the world of FLEL-THINK!
Without a warrant, you could have politely told them "no thanks" and started quoting the Bill of Rights to them.
If these two lady agents were cute, you could have flirted with them, and stared at them before telling them "no".

Or those who don't want to be framed for a killing that the FBI itself may have committed. Wales was involved in the investigation of FBI agents implicated in narcotics smuggling across the Canadian border.
Means, motive and opportunity- IF they get someone else's Makarov to use as a stterile assassination weapon to clean up another of their own problems, or for use in pinning the last one on the next Richard Jewell/Hatfill/James Earl Ray/Oswald they can dig up. Don't embarass the Bureau, fellas.

More like dozens, probably several hundred. The PM Makarov is a popular handgun, and those who use one and fail to clean it afterward find out pretty quickly what the effects of Soviet-Bloc corrosive-primer ammunition are, requiring a replacement barrel if continued effective use is to continue. The Makarov's design allows the simple and easy replacement of barrels with an inexpensive barrel press or large vise, and their stainless steel construction is favoured by some users as one antidote to the corrosive ammo effects problem; others like to change the caliber to the more easily available .380 caliber while they're at it, and the threaded fitting available on the FAC barrels allows the addition of a silencer or sound suppressor in those states where their purchase is legal, or a barrel muzzle weight for target shooters more used to longer-barrelled handguns with a bit more weight up front. And many of those expecting that the use of their handgun might take place at night find a flash suppressor might be a good idea after trying the ex-commie ammo at night.
