If Davis resigns, that would make former Mecha member Cruz Bustamante the new governor. Somehow, I think that might even be worse than Davis, especially since any criticism of him would be smeared with the standard racism chant, even when pointing out he used to belong to a racial separatist organization.

Maybe, maybe not. Davis still has a chance at winning the recall, and he reportedly doesn't like Bustamante. There's also the following section in the California Elections Code, which suffers from various interpretations of the word "filed":

11302. If a vacancy occurs in an office after a recall petition is filed against the vacating officer, the recall election shall nevertheless proceed. The vacancy shall be filled as provided by law, but any person appointed to fill the vacancy shall hold office only until a successor is selected in accordance with Article 4 (commencing with Section 11360) or Article 5 (commencing with Section 11380), and the successor qualifies for that office.
