The undergrad decision will confound the California democrats, libs, minorities.

CA universities and even public schools have "worked around" the voter's victories and the legistlature's laws. Especially on English as primary lanquage in public schools.

Can't you see the screams at Stanford University this morning?

Consider this; if points cannot be used in undergrad colleges, how many will ever reach the graduate level of law school or medical school to get 20 points?

Like the Marines, everyone must now qualify for and survive basic training.

We will hear screams about this, but colleges and universities that flout the new decision on undergrad admissions are in for some bankrupting lawsuits!

The point system is struck down but not the decision process. If a publically funded university decides to allow X% of people of a certain ethnicity, what is to stop them if they don't use a point system?

Supreme court ruling - you can disciminate based on race, just not too much.

Once again the RINOS and the liberals use the constitution as toilet paper

"My point is that the arivees of diverse origins should not try to remake this country in the images of the places they left because this country was more attractive."

If I could find a Mohican some place, he would heartily agree with you.

What you need to come to grips with is the realization that western culture was built on western ideals, not on the color of anyone's skin.

Luis, this is exactly what many of us are trying to say - BUT SCOTUS has stated the opposite, it has to be based on skin color according to a majority of the justices(?).

I went to school with some really rich black kids and very few poor ones.

I went to high school and had a close friend named David Murrel. David was 4th generation Hispanic-American. George's family was a little better off than mine, and they didn't speak a work of Spanish in their home.

Comes time to apply to colleges and David is in hog heaven. Seems that since he was "hispanic" and a good student, colleges were falling all over each other to admit him and give him scholarships. He went to Princeton on a full scholarship and is a doctor today.

This is where I think Affirmative Action goes south. It takes someone's race or ethnicity and blows it out of proportion to the person's whole package. David went to college not on his academic strengths (which fortunately were pretty good) but instead went as a "hispanic" student and he became a "hispanic" doctor, and probably belongs to some "Organization of Hispanic Physicians" or some such rot. I always believed America was a place that melted people together, not catagorized them apart. Dividing people by their race - for preferential or discriminatory purposes - should be abhorant to any freedom loving person.

I'm 30, right in the middle of Generation X and saving up for my escape...hopefully to a small island in the Caribbean, Cayman Islands or St Maarten, maybe.

You're at the top end of Generation X (isn't Gen X 1963-1977 births?), I think.

Indicating one's 'race' is optional. What are they going to do if no one fills it out? I happen to be 1/2white 1/4 black 1/4spanish BUT none of my ancestors are from this country. Both my parents are immigrants. I do not need to get very philosophical about AA. It's against the 14th amendment, and that's all that I need to know. The liberals need to go to hell and leave people alone.

I haven't read the decisions yet, but I'm reasonably sure that the difference between the law school and undergraduate decisions was the system of discrimination practised, not the level of education involved. I.e., you can discriminate on the undergraduate level (or any other level) if you do it the way the University of Michigan law school does.

Now you cite the very thing to which I was referring and state that it's not good enough, and do so without any apology?

Well it's not in his nature to apologize.... as in his gifted mind he's never wrong.... Just the rest of us who support the UN Man, Socialist, wimp President Bush..... but come MAY 2004 he'll support the President 100% for reelection..... That is someone with real strong values.... yep, they flip/flop as the wind blows.

"Luis...'racial diversity' is Marxist prattle."

So, you don't SEE people who are racially different than you are walking around this country day in and day out?

"So, please, take your name calling, race baiting class warfare drivel somewhere else, okay?"

Let's see, in a thread discussing a SCOTUS decision on the viability of race as a factor in the consideration of an applicant's admission to a State University, you want me NOT to discuss race?

Also, could you point out where exactly I have engaged in name-calling on this thread?

Or where I have engaged in class warfare?

It seems to me that you are in need of some education yourself.

I just returned from an admissions seminar at my alma mater, a highly selective, small, private, liberal arts university -- and pretty conservative by higher education standards. They've been trying to increase their "diversity," but not just blacks. They gave some examples of how they made some choices.

One girl who was not quite up to the average in grades or SATs got in at least partly because she's Jewish and the school wants to increase its pool of Jewish students. A guy who also was't quite up to the average (of course not all are up to the average -- that's why it's an average) got in partly because he's from Minnesota and this school doesn't get many people from Minnesota. Is this fair to others who DID have the grades and SATs (in both cases the admissions people were certain the students could do the work)? This is a school that also accepts a large percentage of its legacies.

When Democrats are in charge they do liberal things. When Republicans are in charge they do liberal things.

We have two houses of congress, Conservatism is popular, liberalism is not, the president is popular the democrats are not.

If the time for conservatism is not now, then when?
