Some think that Democrats, chastised by the loss of the presidency of 2000 and the loss of the Senate in 2002, have learned the risk of supporting gun control the hard way. Some even argue that there is a more fundamental change in Democratic beliefs on gun control.

The Dems haven't forgotten their gun control mania, they've just been driven underground for awhile.

Mn. has just passed concealed carry. And to hear to left you'd think that Mn. is going to turn into one giant gunfight at the OK corral.

Yet, as Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi (search) recently said, Democrats will wait and revisit the guns “when the issue is ripe.”

In other words, if the dims regain control of Congress and/or the White House.

Yet, as Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi recently said, Democrats will wait and revisit the guns “when the issue is ripe.”

This statement certainly shows that the house Democratic leader knows that first she must change public opinion and then and only then can she try to enact the law.

The Right constantly thinks that all they need do is elect the right people. Democrats understand that to make changes, the views of the American people must be changed to agree with their desires.

This is a nation of the people, by the people, and for the people.

Those on this sight that scream at politicians don't have a clue about how our government works. It works like this. First, a good majority of voters must be for what ever you want to do. Once that is accomplished just sit back and watch it happen. People that agree with you will run for office. They will get elected because the voters agree with them. Then the elected politicians will enact or repeal the laws needed to gain voter approval for re-election.

Politicians will promise groups anything to get elected. But while in office they will only try to enact what a majority of the voters want. Pelosi just proved that. Most Democrats want gun control. Most Americans do not. Pelosi will not try to do what most Democrats want as long as most voters don't want it. Most Americans want free prescription drugs as part of Medicare. Many on the right do not want that. Since most voters want it, Bush and the Democrats will work for it and get it passed.

Those that control public opinion run this nation. They never have to hold an office to be in total control.

And nary a word will be heard when it doesn't.

Wayne LaPierre was right. Democrats want gun violence, it's useful to them.

...Surprisingly, the Bush administration has basically left most Clinton gun control policies (search) in place...

Who is surprised?

Bump for the commentator with uncommon common sense.

1. It is a curiosity that with all of the media bias on the gun issue noted by Lott, the Democrats have not materially changed either the public perception that the Second Amendment is basically OK or the legislative/electoral outcome (witness even MN putting through concealed carry.)

Can we assume then that the controllers...
"Those that control public opinion run this nation."
...are not comprised of the elite media on this issue?

2. I find this post encouraging in that the elites are now bucking a measurable headwind of internet-informed folks (a minority, clearly), talk-radio informed folks (also still a minority) and an administration in DC which is anathema to the Left (but hardly a 'Constitutional' administration). The confluence of these factors is apparently diminishing the elite media considerably - along with their own internal diseases, e.g. the Jayson Blair effect.

3. Democrats waiting until 'the issue is ripe' betray the fact that they are merely an opportunistic infection of the body politic. They are praying for the economy to tank, a gun disaster larger than Columbine, etc. That will be their lever to push opinion their way. The bigger the calamity, the bigger the lever. Goebbels would love it. Absent a calamity, they are in deep weeds. Even Hillary Regina will prove unmarketable and unelectable if this continues. (I pray).

The lopsided coverage of the costs and benefits of guns in the media and the government ensures that the push for more regulations will not go away.
The News We (CNN) Kept To Ourselves is an example of the fact that the selection of what news is "fit to print" can be powerfully influenced by the self-interest of the editor. And editors simply aren't impressed with the sales potential of a story about a dog that didn't bark or a citizen whose self-protective potential meant that s/he was not attacked.

Just two more Democratic senators and 13 more Democratic House members and gun control legislation would go from fond dreams to reality.

Fond Dreams for democRats, a civil rights nightmare for the rest of us, leading to the destruction of America as even we know it.

When those who survive, pry it from my cold dead hands...........it will be EMPTY!

What is the heck does "(SEARCH)" mean? It was really irritating to have the sentences broken up by this insertion.

Of course they haven't dropped their agenda. It's been in place for over 40 years and in terms of that kind of timeline, they are searingly close to total victory. Every move they make, every national committee appointment (like Pelosi), every candidate at all levels of government virtually screams that this anti-freedom agenda still rules. The only change is the media reporting is dropping the volume level so as to sneak that camel's nose right under the tent flap past the citizens who are quitely asleep at the switch, ever comfortable that "they really showed 'em in 2000!"
