Well, the top 4 bestsellers on Amazon this morning are:
1. Harry Potter (book 5)
2. John Steinbech's East of Eden (because Oprah recommended it)
3. Ann Coulter's new book Treason
4. Hillary's Living History
So given that it's now in 4th place after only a short time, why wouldn't they be selling for discounted prices? People are trying to unload them before the book slips to 10th.

Price has dropped to $12.99. That's for a used book. The criteria here is NEW BOOKS. The point is why would anybody buy Hillary's book (you could end the sentence here but...) for $28 publisher's price when you can purchase it BRAND NEW on Amazon.Com for $13.99? Even the Hillary Kool-Aid drinkers would have a hard time paying full price when it is available for half price on Amazon. And what will happen to Hillary's royalties now?

What's up with Oprah? Maybe someone with PJ's literary knowledge is advising her. "East of Eden" is great literature and bears no resemblance to the PC, victomology junk she used to tout.

And what will happen to Hillary's royalties now? As far as royalties go, she couldn't care less how it sells. She got her $8 million advance.

An interesting thing about Steinbeck is that for years Columbia University REFUSED to study his works. Why? Because he committed the "Hate Crime" of switching from a Lefty to someone more conservative. There is still a lot antagonism directed towards Steinbeck from the Left.
An early and VERY INTERESTING book by John Steinbeck was In Dubious Battle published in 1936. It is about Communist labor organizing activities among apple orchard workers. You can actually sense Steinbeck's internal struggle over whether the Communists were good for the workers or were merely taking advantage of them. He never really resolves the issue in his mind in the book (although he gives strong hints that the Communists were predatory). It wasn't until years later that he firmly rejected the Communist cause.
BTW, in East of Eden the heartless who becomes a hooker is actually based on one of Steinbeck's wives who cheated on him right from the start of their marriage. He based the novel's character DIRECTLY on her. One other FANTASTIC thing about East Of Eden is that the first part of the book is basically a history of the Steinbeck's own family in that California valley.
East Of Eden is definitely a MUST READ. One of the BEST novels ever written (and much different than the James Dean movie). You will learn more about society in this and many other novels than you would in non-fiction books such as Hillary's. Oops! Actually Hillary's book IS fiction.

She was paid $8 million up front. No royalties...she doesn't care.
"Living History" just like a "Living Document" is interpreted as one sees fit.
And now we have a "Living Book Sale"

As far as royalties go, she couldn't care less how it sells. She got her $8 million advance. I thought she received "only" $2.5 million. Isn't the remainder contingent upon book sales? If so, then Hillary ain't getting it.

According to F&F, Oprah is tired of authors throwing themselves at her and publishing houses inundating her with new fiction. Doing the classics is easier and imho raises the bar on quality. I'm no O fan but I do love Steinbeck.
The Hillary book? Next month it will be at the local thrift store selling for $1. That's how I obtained Rush's book.

I wonder if this was Oprah's clever way of getting out of recommending Hillary's book. I will bet there was heavy pressure on her to push it on the show, which Oprah, smart marketing person that she is, knew would alienate a whole bunch of her viewers.

The novel,
East Of Eden was much better. In the book, the Raymond Massey character was not some narrow-minded type as portrayed in the movie. Actually he was a much more important character in the book. The great thing about the book was the ABSOLUTE VENOM that Steinbeck directed toward's the guy's wife who became a hooker. In the movie, she was slightly sympathetic. In the novel she was pure evil. The reason for this is that Steinbeck based her character on a former wife who started cheating on him right from the beginning of their marriage and
East Of Eden was sort of payback for her.
BTW, I LOVE researching the backgrounds of novels and see who the novelists based their characters on. The BEST novelists have based their characters on real people. The most fun has been researching the real people that James Jones based his fictional characters on.

I can't say I know the details. I do know she's getting $4 million up front in payments of $1.5 and $2.5 million. But I think the whole $8 million is guaranteed, sales or no sales.
