On June 19, 1953, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed for passing secrets of the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union. In their trial, the primary witness against Ethel was her brother, David Greenglass. Greenglass was also convicted of spying and sentenced to prison, but he was released in 1960. Now, he's finally telling his side of the story.

Soviets gave the Rosenberg and Greenglass families ten grand to split in order to get out of the country (about $73,000 in 2003 dollars).

Greenglass just said he didn't want to leave the USA and go to a "hell-hole" like the Soviet Union or China.

Yes, and it turned out the Soviet's code name for Julius Rosenberg was 'Liberal.' (**snicker**)

You could make a weak case that the Soviets were our allies and on the same side until the end of WWII; but, even during the war the US realized that the Soviets were more of an enemy than the Nazis.

HOWEVER, Julius and Ethel were tried in the 1950's, during the cold war, when the Soviets were our arch-enemies. They weren't spying for an ally by any stretch, and the fact that they were Jewish is not relevant.

Bottom line? We were definitely not on the same side as the Soviets during this period and history shows that the two were stone cold guilty. They paid the price, and Ethel's brother should have also....

No argument there; it happens all the time in the intelligence community. My response to the poster was triggered by statements made which were transparently false. I don't know if the poster is deliberately spreading disinformation, or simply ignorant of history.

Either way, I don't care. I've been correcting historical inaccuracies on this board for many years; it's a function I enjoy and a task which is critically necessary. It's what seperates us from liberal BS artists....

What had the Feds in a panic is that Venona had shown there were 349 Soviet agents in America. Of that, only 150 or so could be identified. With the Soviets pushing everywhere and America troops dying in Korea, it was imperative we find out who those other 200 agents were. That is why they squeezed the Rosenbergs. We never did find out who most of the traitors were.

I don’t want to start anything, but the government seemed to be very careful to avoid any appearance of anti-Semitism. All, if not most of the government lawyers, and the judge were all Jews.
The Soviet Union by that time was no ally of the US. The Rosenberg’s were communist spies that’s why they got the juice. The fact that they were Jewish had nothing to do with it. IMHO.

Yes. And they have not gone away either. Robert Meeropol, the Rosenberg's kid, has a Rosenberg fund for children of political activists who are harassed (he says) by the government. It claims to have 10,000 regular donors. Studs Terkel, Richie Havens, Ron Dellums, Susan Sarandon, Ed Asner, Pete Seeger--among others--are either on the board or are advisors. They had a benefit today in NYC.
