Senate Democrats add taxes to temporary spending bill

Raleigh: June 19 - North Carolina Senate Democrats voted to add increased taxes, Thursday, to a stop-gap spending resolution designed to continue state government operations beyond June 30. This first ‘continuing resolution’ dampened earlier optimism that a full budget would be approved in time for the beginning of the new fiscal year July 1.

Senate Republicans voted together against the continuing resolution after Democrats rejected a Republican amendment that removed the new taxes.

Offered by Sen. Phil Berger, R-Rockingham, the GOP proposal reduced taxes and allowed sufficient spending to keep government operating without increased spending or new taxes.

Berger said state revenue growth, along with a half billion dollars in federal aid to North Carolina included in the President’s tax relief package, made a third straight year of tax increases unnecessary.

Republicans cited budgetary figures and revenue projections prepared by legislative staff to support their contention that increased taxes championed by Senate Democrats are unneeded.

The figures, provided to Republicans by legislative budget writers, show surplus revenues of more than $110 million available without the Senate Democrat’s tax increases.

“Without a doubt,” Berger said, “Democrats could have passed this stop-gap spending plan without increasing taxes. This illustrates once again North Carolina does not have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem.”

“It’s simple,” said Sen. Andrew Brock, R-Davie. “Senate Democrats are addicted to spending.”

The Democrat Party has given in to the ultra-liberal wing all across this country. All they know how to do is tax-spend-grow government and steal.

There are Republicans guilty of that as well.

I agree with you on three out of four! The Republican Party has no ultra liberal left wing with any clout though. At least not that I can see.
