"We live in a remarkable moment when technology is turning the impossible into the commonplace. Just as computers and the Internet have transformed the way we shop, communicate and work, it is a matter of time before these innovations transform the way we govern ourselves"

Who was that techno-enthusiast? California Gov. Gray Davis, writing in a newspaper article he co-authored with New York Gov. George Pataki in 2000. The governors were hopeful that citizens could be empowered to vote electronically one day.

I think the authur is very right. I downloaded several recall petitions and immediately got 20 signatures. Without the internet I question whether I would have done any of this. This is simply the age we live in.

Don't worry about this age, its better this way.

Gov. Gray Davis, writing in a newspaper article he co-authored with New York Gov. George Pataki in 2000. The governors were hopeful that citizens could be empowered to vote electronically one day.

Looks like that days has come. I passed what I printed off the net around my work. People are voting Gray, just not people you like. They are all American citizens.

A liberal who confesses how the Internet has come back to bite in the rear. Gee, whatta surprise... yup, the 'Net's today the stomping grounds for normal Americans, if you get my drift.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Grayout Davis is trying to now block internet activity, like the Recall Davis thing, that might harm his already dead career?
Not sure where I heard it, probably overheard it somewhere.

That's why I am asking for confirmation or correction on it.
It'd be ironic, considerng Grayout wanted people to be able to electronically vote.....

Are there other conservatives that are troubled by the recall? this is very likely a genie- once out of the bottle- that will make it impossible to govern california. given the dominance of the democratic party in the state- this may be more easily wielded against republicans.

what do you think?

Internet Puts the 'e' in Recall

Where I come from, "recall" has always had an E in it.

I hadn't heard of Tribune-owned media or others being affected by the settlement. Do you have a source?

Click on the link he provided in his post and it'll take you directly to the source. Also, I believe there's additional information on the FR Homepage.

(The red letters are the link, btw.)

No, I mean a source that verifies that "Tribune-owned media" and "others" must be excerpted on FR. I thought that rule applied only to LA Times and Washington Post.

the rumor that Grayout Davis is trying to now block internet activity, like the Recall
Nothing would surprise me, even though when Bill Bradley was pushing what became McCain Feingold he declaimed against "the rich man's wallet" dominating "the poor man's soap box." The Internet is in fact the "poor man's soap box" as compared to the "rich man's wallet" which is the mainstream press.

I'm not worried at all.

First, voters are loathe to have to get worked up and focused enough on a political matter to participate to any extent in something so foreign to them.

So the issue has to be pretty hot or contentious to get them to cooperate enough.

This is precisely why the previous 31 recall attempts against Governors have failed and why no statewide elected official has ever been recalled in the state's history.

Now, that said, you certainly have a point in the short term given that the success (if it is successful in the end) of the recall campaign will leave many Californians feeling emboldened and involved. And since they have such a pent up frustration with Sacramento as a whole, it would not be surprising to see some legislators come under the recall gun. Whether they would succeed or not would depend on the circumstance, the district, the lawmaker, the action he/she had engaged in to spark the recall, etc...

But I think this whole thing has a Prop 13 angle. And I think that the public would be predisposed to be supportive of recall-alligned folks and predisposed to be AGAINST individuals who backed Davis or refused to support the recall.

The recall and a politician's position on it will likely become a litmus test for California voters as to determining "who the good guy is."
