No country in the world still manufactures AP for the .30-06 for military use, hence very little supply of AP.

As an aside from the article: I've seen .30 AP pulled bullets (projectiles) available at gunshows and such for reloaders (along with things like tracer bullets). Do you know if it's legal to make your own AP? Is the ban just on commercial manufacture and sale of the stuf and not private loading and posession?

It is not illegal to manufacture AP ammo. Just AP ammo for sale to the general public that is a "pistol caliber". The reason no country manufactures AP for the .30-06 is that the .30-06 is not used by any military. You can still mfr and sell .30-06 for now.

I suppose that some jack booted thug could consider you putting an AP bullet into a .308 casing for your personal use as "manufacturing" AP in a "pistol" caliber.

When I got my DCM Garand, I immediately went to a gunshow and acquired a large supply (this was pre Y2K and that hysteria was in full swing and I had just analyzed the Clinton EO's) of 30-06 AP and tracer and API (Armor Piercing INCINDIARY) and promptly loaded a bunch of Garand clips (not mags--clips..there is a big difference) with a healthy mix of these projectiles and to this day I have them still. Just in case.

In case of what? In case Hillary becomes President and gives the BATF national marching orders a la WACO. Does that make me a marginalized paranoid? Probably. But as a dedicated teacher of history, I'm also a student of history and the history of tyranny is entwined with gun control. It is ugly, bloody and often repeated...and we just never seem to learn!
