Toby Kieth-Pro Capital Punishment Song (w/ Willy Nelson)
Posted on 06/17/2003 3:18:41 PM PDT by far sider
I heard a great song the other day, on some country countdown show. I don't listen to country that much so I may have misunderstood...is this the No. 1 country song? I was surprised that it was a duet with Willy Nelson. It's seems like it clearly supports the death penalty.
Artist : Toby Keith
Song : Beer For My Horses
Well, a man come on the 6 o'clock news
Said somebody's been shot, somebody's been abused
Somebody blew up a building
Somebody stole a car
Somebody got away
Somebody didn't get too far yeah
They didn't get too far
Grandpappy told my pappy, back in my day, son
A man had to answer for the wicked that he done
Take all the rope in Texas
Find a tall oak tree, round up all of them bad boys
Hang them high in the streets
For all the people to see
Chours:
That justice is the one thing you should always find
You got to saddle up your boys
You got to draw a hard line
When the gun smoke settles we'll sing a victory tune
We'll all meet back at the local saloon
We'll raise up our glasses against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men, beer for my horses
We've got too many gansters doing dirty deeds
Too much corruption and crime in the streets
It's time the long arm of the law put a few more in the ground
Send 'em all to their maker and he'll settle 'em down
You can bet he'll set 'em down, 'cause
Chours: x2

I've seen squirrels and birds drunk on fermented fruit and I've heard elephants make an annual trek in Africa to find fermented fruit and get really ripped. What a sight that would be! I've never seen a drunk horse though. If a horse did get drund he'd probably make a horses ass of himself.

It already has! This song has been #1 for three weeks in a row. The Chicks have no song even in the Top 20. Keith's album has also been skipping between #1 and #2 for about a month or so. The Chick's album has been dropping a rank every week.

My whole family loves that song -- but I never considered it pro-death penalty per se. I considered more of an old-fashioned swift justice song. Every time I hear it, I think of our president. The leftist elites think calling him a "cowboy" is an insult. I consider it a compliment.

A man had to answer for the wicked that he done
Take all the rope in Texas [I love the Texas reference, with all the liberals whining about how many killer's Bush executed]
It's time the long arm of the law put a few more in the ground
Send 'em all to their maker and he'll settle 'em down
Sounds pro-capital punishement to me.

Yes, and that isn't the only reference to executions. They also talk about stringing them up in trees. I'm not suggesting the song opposes capital punishment. It is just that the headline you use, IMO, is a bit misleading. I don't think the song set out to advocate capital punishment, so much as a time to return to the days of swift justice -- which included capital punishment.

Toby Keith has another song about how Willie Nelson's pot is too strong for him.

I have a siamese cat who loves the stuff!
BTW, Jade also is pro-death penalty! ( for mice!)

(Since 2002-05-19 __ I'll admit it....I just LOVE Toby Keith!)

What is it disappointing? It is a great song and it certainly gives the impression it advocates capital punishment. All I'm saying is I don't think that was the intent of the song when it was written. It was about the broader sense of justice, which includes the death penalty.

Sorry. I meant to reply to Post 11:

The post implies that TK smokes pot. If so, I'm disappointed.

I think that poster was just being a
smart@ss. It was a dig at Nelson.

What song is that?
To: far sider
It's called Ill Never Smoke Weed With Willie Again.
I found it on Limewire.
To: soccermom
It's a real song. Copy the title into google.
