Text of Congressman Ron Paul's Letter to House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (get US out of UN)
Just 15 Minutes ^ | April 16, 2003 | Congressman Ron Paul

April 16, 2003

The Honorable Tom DeLay
Majority Leader
U.S. House of Representatives

Dear Mr. DeLay:

I would like to thank you for your long and tireless support for American sovereignty. I am writing to ask your assistance in a matter of great importance to our future as a nation. As you may know, I have introduced the American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2003, H.R. 1146. This bill ends the United States' participation in and funding of the United Nations.

Considering the abysmal performance of the United Nations in all aspects of the Iraq crisis and war, I believe now is the time to revisit this critical issue. More than ever, now is the time for the United States to get out of the United Nations. More Americans every day are questioning America's involvement in and support for the United Nations.

That is why I ask for your help to bring H.R. 1146 to the floor of the House of Representatives for a vote.

In the past you have consistently voted for my amendments to the Foreign Operations Appropriations Bills that cut off funding for the United Nations. I have always appreciated your support for these amendments and the concern for American sovereignty that they represent.

Let me thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.

Sincerely,

Ron Paul, M.D.
Member of Congress

The UN will be a bigger problem for us if we leave it. It will become a thorn in our side. As bad as we think the UN is, it is better because we are part of it. With us out of it, it will be worse and we will have to deal with much of the damage they cause. As long as an international organization the size of the UN exists, we need to remain a part of it's decision making process and exert influence on its policies and on its members. We can't run and hide and hope it won't affect us. And what's with all this Ron Paul worship?

From UN Electoral Assistance Division Department of Political Affairs:

The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote... - Universal Declaration of Human Rights

SCARY!!!

Oh yeah, it's absolutely crucial 'to remain a part of its decision making process'.

What's with all this UN worship?

No Ron Paul worship here....I just believe that we need to either leave, or start throwing our weight around in there. We cowtail to them to much.

We are as ineffective in there as we would be if we left because we let them rule us. America is a sovreign nation and should be ruled by no other.

I must respectfully disagree, Consort, that the UN will be a constant thorn in our sides if we leave. We provide the single largest source of income to the UN, and we also provide the most military support (both financially and direct military action). Without our support, and probably more importantly, without the legitimacy our membership provides, the UN will begin it's slow downward spiral. They cannot find the funds or military to replace our departure. I think the UN realizes this, and has been despartely trying to get some sort of "global tax" to find another source of dependable income. Please do not mind spelling errors if you find them, I have a two-year old on my lap who wants to type also.

The UN will have no funding problems if we run and and try to bury our head in the sand. After we exit and the UN becomes more and more anti-American, the money will pour in and the diplomatic assaults on us will be coordinated with the terrorist assaults and it will then cost us much more in more ways than one. Once we make that mistake, we won't be able to reverse it.

You are making that based on the assumption that we would be the only ones to leave. I believe if we leave, other nations such as Britan would follow. Additionally, they would no longer be in OUR country with all the "diplomatic ammunity" they run around with now.

You are right about one thing, they could then come out of the closet and show themselves as the terrorist supporting organization they really are.

Personally, I don't think it will actually come to us leaving, the threat of it, along with our allies, will mean a major coup and overhaul in the way it is run now....no more "libya in charge of the summit on terrorism" or "iraq in charge of the summit on human rights"...and for God's sake...put a REAL president in there.

Changes start with resistance...however we must be prepared to back the threat we make. I do not believe we should be allowed to have fear guide us in our decision, with that kind of thinking, my FRiend, we would burry our heads in the sand and let them rule us always.

In the past, I have also argued to get US out of the UN, but I am slowly beginning to think otherwise. So I agree with Consort, to an extent. Personally, I think we should de-fund them (and use the money saved in more constructive ways), insist on full payment of every single stinking parking ticket in NYC, and remain "in" as the snotty voice of conscience for the rest of the world. After all, Belgium gets to pose as our superior, even as it refuses to fund the UN's "worthy" goals. They can never ignore us.

Kind of along the lines of my thinking. We also need to make them start reimbursing America for every stinking operation they drag our military into under their leadership.

I do believe, HOWEVER, they should NEVER be in charge of our troops, our military stragey, personnel & weaponary is FAR superior to any other country out there and should NEVER be under UN control. Every time they have control we end up with another "Blackhawk Down"

I REFUSE to not speak out on them being put in charge of our fine men & women who sacrafice their lives selflessly.

Things need to change, and change for the better!

You are making that based on the assumption that we would be the only ones to leave.
How many of the 191+ member nations have agreed to leave with us? And how many might say they will leave with us just to get us out of there?

You are right about one thing, they could then come out of the closet and show themselves as the terrorist supporting organization they really are.

The dire implications of that scenario could be far reaching and long lasting.

Personally, I don't think it will actually come to us leaving,...however we must be prepared to back the threat we make.

Great. That really clears it up.

Yes, I believe it is sometimes called the Tobin tax, but I'm not absolutely certain. The latest idea is a small (percent-wise) tax on international trade, which of course would be huge (and mostly from the US) in absolute amounts.

Paying people to be our friends will never work (maybe in the short term, I would give you that). I do think most of the UN funding would be severely affected by our exit. When I worked in the State Department as part of the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (BPRM), I found that most of the 900 million dollars we gave in FY 2000 was "leverage" money, we would give 12 million to the UNHCR as seed, so that the EU would give 6 million, and other countries would give money because we did. If we stopped, I think a lot of that funding would also stop. Our exit would affect more than the obligatory 25% we give now.
