I agree - unless we're willing to go in with military force (and I don't think we are there yet either), then the administration needs to be careful with their public statements. Therein lies the conundrum - support without too much support which could endanger protestor's lives.

He's an admitted democrat, but he's thoughtful and is starting to see the light. He also has a lot of integrity and you can see that it bothers him that the party does not.

I haven't slept much over the past week.
I take my responsibility as a free man to do all in my power to support those seeking that which I for so long took for granted. A little loss of sleep to in someway contribute to the freedom of others is a very small price to pay indeed. I wish I could do more. But together we can make a difference.

Groups of young are defying the presence of the regime forces and their injunctions in order to reach rally points.

This is very good news. I pray they have the strength to continue without having to use too many of those Molotov Cocktails.

More from the student site:

Main Iranian cities rocked by protests and clashes on night 8th of unrests
SMCCDI (Information Service)
July 17, 2003

Clashes are rocking at this time (23:50 local time), main Iranian cities, such as Tehran, Ahwaz, Kermanshah, Esfahan, Shiraz, Kerman and even Shahin Shahr were a state of martial law exists following the violent unrests of the last 2 days.

Thousands and thousands of Iranians have come into main streets nearing these cities center points and have created heavy traffic jams paralyzing the regime forces in order to move for cracking down on protesters who are shouting slogans against the regime.

Groups of young who are much more organized on this 8th consecutive night of unrests are inflicting damages to the regime forces during their attack by of course getting injured.

Rocks and Molotov Cocktails as well as tires set on fire are responding to the regime's men knives, clubs, chains and tear gas.

In Tehran, alone, several areas from west to east and north to south are scenes of huge protest actions with at their center point the West Azadi, Fatemi and Amir Abad areas.

Even the foreign mercenaries of the regime seem astonished by such braveries and defiance as the thought was that the rumor of the vast deployment of these forces would make the Iranians to resign to their last 24 years of dark fate.

News from Shahin shahr are stating about clash and run process where young transferred Abadanis
force the regime men to follow them into dark streets where other freedom fighters are ready to
destroy their vehicles with incendiary devices or traps created with oil or metallic cables for their motorbikes.

....Could you please give us more info regarding the students calling for a protest against the NY Times?...

I saw a post on the student movement site and tried to get them some coverage. I don't know how successful was. Most Americans weren't following the student movement at the time. Fortuantely, they are starting to.

Here is a link to the story.

Banafsheh Zand-Bonazzi la_fleur_violette@yahoo.com She is an intellegent spokewoman for the protesters. She is very connected, a filmaker and her father (also a filmaker) is in Evin prison right now. She lives in the NY area.

I've email all FOX shows and some of my radio contacts asking them to get intouch with her.

I think FOX is already responding to our information as they are covering these protests better than any other station.

You are a patriot serving the cause of freedom, here and in Iran.

You have earned the rest you will get when this is over and the Persians are free.

Re #136

Domes and the monster-like giant seem to symbolize the Islamic regime. They have gashes. I am not sure if the warrior on horseback with a battle ax is also the symbol of the Islamci regime. The background shows what appears to be ancient ruins of Persian Empire. We can also see an small angel-like figure between the two domes. A lightening bolt from the ancient ruin is striking the symbols of the Islamic regime.

It appears that the spirit of the ancient Persia is punishing the evil Islamic regime of today, while the mass of Iranians are rising up.

I am neither an expert nor a native. I am just conveying my impression.

Great picture.

Here is the website of the artist:

My impression is similar to yours, that people rise up and perhaps an ancient warrior (one of Persia's historical heroes?) symbolizing courage and strength is winning the fight against the oppressive Islamist regime.
