This happened Saturday night! That means this guy sat around for 36 hours, knowing he'd hit somebody, hard, and made no effort to do anything about it or talk to authorities.

Or, worse, he didn't know he'd hit somebody. Or, somebody else was in the car with him and he doesn't want anybody to find out about it.

Just speculating here why a bishop would hide.

Who does he think he is, Teddy Kennedy??? Bad enough that TWO cars hit this guy, and both fled the scene. But who would have figured one was Bishop? Wierd thing is the Bishop may not have been initially at fault in the accident.

Whew. What got me was the article says he's upset, but doing well. How can he be doing well! I feel upset not even knowing the bishop and being hundreds and hundreds of miles away. Reminds me just a bit of Chappaquidick. The poor family of the victim, and the people of Phoenix who are now wondering what their bishop was up to. Sad, sad. Hitting is most serious, and leaving the scene is unthinkable.

"Just speculating here why a bishop would hide."

Agree with your 'speculations'. . .and no doubt,he was hiding or just 'getting his grip';

. . .or maybe he just thought a deer jumped off the city sidewalk or somesuch. . . .

Pathetic, pathetic excuses for Moral leadership. . .

Because he has been doing it for a decade or more...
hiding perpetrators that is...
admitted it in his plea bargain last month...

and then gave the DA the "virtual finger" via the news media primetime for three weeks... over his involvement in hiding molesting priests.

This is almost impossible to believe, like al capone getting it for... TAX EVASION after all the people he iced...

The divine hand of justice?
Or just a perpetrator, whose do it then cover it up, lifestyle has finally caught up with him...

see the article... this guy was identified by the DA in a plea agreement, as an admitted bag man in the child abuse scandal in phoenix...

The bishop further acknowledged in the statement "that priests who had allegations of sexual misconduct made against them were transferred to ministries without full disclosure to their supervisor or to the community in which they were assigned."

Romley said those admissions and other evidence he gathered during his investigation convinced him that he had the evidence to bring a felony criminal indictment against O'Brien for obstruction of justice.

The county attorney said he decided against seeking an indictment only after getting what he considered to be a candid confession from O'Brien and a promise that the bishop would surrender all power to deal with sex abuse allegations in the diocese.

"I could have brought charges," Romley said at his news conference. "But I felt my primary goal was to protect the children. I chose the future rather than dwell on the tragedies of the past."

Just speculating here why a bishop would hide.

Assuming he was drunk (why else would anyone leave the scene of what was just an accident), the prosecutor can no longer obtain breathalizer or blood test evidence of drunk driving and making a case for negligent homicide would be more difficult, the penalties for which are far greater. this my not save him because if he was driving drunk, there are likely to be witnesses to his drinking and his drunken state could be proven by eyewitness testimony. Basicly, he knew he was screwed and he is desperately hoping to avoid the consequences of his crimes as he did with the sex abuse cases.

In any event, he and the diocese need to get out their checkbooks.
