Hillary Clinton calls for inquiry over Iraq

Hillary Clinton has called for independent inquiries to review the credibility of the intelligence used to justify war in Iraq.

The New York senator joined the mounting pressure in both Britain and the US to investigate allegations that details of Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction were exaggerated.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Tony Blair said he would not appear before the Foreign Affairs Select Committee to give evidence on alleged misuse of reports in the so-called 'dodgy dossier'.

But Senator Clinton said that although the jury was still out on whether weapons would ever be found, it was essential to discover what happened with the intelligence in both nations.

In an interview with Sir Trevor McDonald in Washington, she said: "I hope that in both our countries we have independent inquiries that get to the facts about the intelligence."

Asked if she thought there was a problem, she said: "I think there could be.

"What is important is that we really do find out what the truth was because this is not just about the past, whether or not the intelligence was either wrong or skewed for whatever purpose, but going forward."

Mrs Clinton said she did not know if people were misled but said: "That is why this cannot be left unanswered.

"I voted for the Iraqi resolution, and I did it in large measure based on the intelligence that I was privy to."

Mrs Clinton was interviewed for ITV1's Tonight with Trevor McDonald programme.

She also described how the affair between 23-year-old White House intern Monica Lewinsky and her husband, Bill, when he was US President, almost wrecked their marriage.

She said she had wanted to "wring his neck" when she eventually discovered the truth, and the couple needed counselling following it.

"I was furious and I was heartbroken and I was angry at him, and I was, I was just beside myself, because I had believed him, and obviously, I had wanted to believe him and I had chosen to believe him, but then I was told that I had been misled, along with everyone else."

I'm sure she's furious, angry, and heartbroken over the innocent Iraqis killed. Right, Hill? Right?

Redundantly, Hillary says she's "furious, angry," and she throws in "heartbroken" for emphasis. Reminds me of Tom Daschle, who's always sooooooooooooooooooo disappointed.

Phoney words.

I'm surprised she's doing this. It would bring out prior intelligence that her husband would have known and did almost nothing about!

I went to the WalMart today, and noticed in the front of the store, (by the carts, McDonald's and restrooms), there was a special Hillary book display. Very prominent. A shoulder high cardboard bookcase with 3 vertical shelves of books, I'm guessing it probably held about 24-30 books. Didn't look like any had been sold, but then, this is Bush Country.

Funny isn't it....Hillary's gal pal Martha, made mucho millions with K-Mart, so Hillary wants to do the same with WalMart. Only difference, Martha's customers get something of quality, something real, for their hard earned money.

Interesting observation. I was in a WalMart today in 'Kennedy Kountry'....MA and didn't see a single copy prominently displayed.....but perhaps the shipment hasn't arrived?

I was at the Kroger today, and the Hitlery book is already for sale in their discount book section at 25 percent off.

If it's already at the grocery store with the cheap romances, it's NOT selling.

Clinton: Iraq has abused its last chance

In this story:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- From the Oval Office, President Clinton told the nation Wednesday evening why he ordered new against.

The president said Iraq's refusal to cooperate with U.N. weapons inspectors presented a threat to the entire world.

"Saddam (Hussein) must not be allowed to threaten his neighbors or the world with nuclear arms, poison gas or biological weapons," Clinton said.

Operation Desert Fox, a strong, sustained series of attacks, will be carried out over several days by U.S. and British forces, Clinton said.

"Earlier today I ordered America's armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces," Clinton said.

"Their mission is to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors," said Clinton.

Clinton also stated that, while other countries also had weapons of mass destruction, Hussein is in a different category because he has used such weapons against his own people and against his neighbors.

'Without delay, diplomacy or warning'

The Iraqi leader was given a final warning six weeks ago, Clinton said, when Baghdad promised to cooperate with U.N. inspectors at the last minute just as U.S. warplanes were headed its way.

"Along with Prime Minister (Tony) Blair of Great Britain, I made it equally clear that if Saddam failed to cooperate fully we would be prepared to act without delay, diplomacy or warning," Clinton said.

The president said the report handed in Tuesday by Richard Butler, head of the United Nations Special Commission in charge of finding and destroying Iraqi weapons, was stark and sobering.

Iraq failed to cooperate with the inspectors and placed new restrictions on them, Clinton said. He said Iraqi officials also destroyed records and moved everything, even the furniture, out of suspected sites before inspectors were allowed in.

"Instead of inspectors disarming Saddam, Saddam has disarmed the inspectors," Clinton said.

"In halting our airstrikes in November, I gave Saddam a chance -- not a license. If we turn our backs on his defiance, the credibility of U.S. power as a check against Saddam will be destroyed," the president explained.
Strikes necessary to stunt weapons programs

Clinton said he made the decision to strike Wednesday with the unanimous agreement of his security advisors.
Timing was important, said the president, because without a strong inspection system in place, Iraq could rebuild its chemical, biological and nuclear programs in a matter of months, not years.

"If Saddam can cripple the weapons inspections system and get away with it, he would conclude the international community, led by the United States, has simply lost its will," said Clinton. "He would surmise that he has free rein to rebuild his arsenal of destruction."

Clinton also called Hussein a threat to his people and to the security of the world.

"The best way to end that threat once and for all is with a new Iraqi government -- a government ready to live in peace with its neighbors, a government that respects the rights of its people," Clinton said.

Such a change in Baghdad would take time and effort, Clinton said, adding that his administration would work with Iraqi opposition forces.

Clinton also addressed the ongoing impeachment crisis in the White House.

"Saddam Hussein and the other enemies of peace may have thought that the serious debate currently before the House of Representatives would distract Americans or weaken our resolve to face him down," he said.

"But once more, the United States has proven that although we are never eager to use force, when we must act in America's vital interests, we will do so."

LOT OF "CLINTON SAID" IN HERE. HILLARY ARE YOU LISTENING???

With the democRats' emasculation of the CIA - led by the corrupt Torricelli (D-NJ) - during the regime of her philandering hubby, I'd think this a can of worms she'd be somewhat reluctant to open. It can't help the rat party to dredge this up again.

Is this why Jesse Jackson was at the White House so often...counselling the Clintons?

Hillary Clinton calls for inquiry over Iraq

Best idea she's had so far -- let's start with what its husband did while the "Perp in Chief" during the KKKlinton bubble of the 90's...

Guess she wouldn't consider going back that far...
