HANDCUFFED IN COURT: J. Michael Boxley, 43, goes before a judge yesterday after being arrested and taken from his Capitol office on two counts of rape.

ALBANY - Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver's chief counsel was arrested in his state office on rape charges yesterday - possibly involving the use of a date-rape drug - and led away in handcuffs as stunned officials looked on.

The arrest of Boxley, who 21/2 years ago was accused in an administrative complaint of raping a 24-year-old Assembly aide, during the intense final days of this year's session.

It wasn't the rape that rocked them it was the gall of the police who dared to arrest him.

Actually, I'm pretty skeptical of date rape charges.

I'm not. It happened to me 30 years ago. He was the roommate of an acquaintance. I was bruised and actually fainted the next morning, the only time in my life I've ever passed out. It was 1973, so one didn't report such an incident. No one would have believed me because it was still part of the "free love" era.

The memory is still strong for me but I don't dredge it up very often. I'm thankful that today women are believed.

I equate the date rape thing with adolescent, unevolved men who think every woman wants him even when she says no.

Who hasn't had the experience of guys coming on to us.

You say, "I'm not interested." But the guy's thinking, "Man, she wants me."

Many of these types get obsessed. Then you have big problem. They just can't seem to take no for an answer.
