Arnie Announces He Will Take On California Governor
Arnold Schwarzenegger is going against his wife Maria Shriver's wishes and running for California Governor in 2006.
The action man was forced to pull out of plans to run for office last year due to his filming commitments, but he's determined to get political, despite his wife's reluctance.
Shriver, a member of America's famous Kennedy clan, believes her husband can do more good for people by privately championing causes.
But, although Arnie agrees with her, he tells Esquire magazine that he plans to overturn California Governor Gray Davis as a Republican candidate.
He says, "Maria makes a very good point, but I would love to be Governor of California. If the state needs me, and if there's no one I think is better, then I will run."

I would be hard pressed to see how he could be any worse than the crook we have in there now. However, I don't think Arnie is as conservative as I'd like to see in there.
Good old Maria seems to be scared to death someone other than a pig like Teddy might gain control of the state.

I know some folks feel hesitant about his running, but I think there is a great deal of good in this :-) Arnold has the best chance of any Republican I know of to gain enough votes from the masses...
Of course, I might be biased. I spoke to him once when I worked for a financial institution and he spelled his name for me... a most patient and kind gent ;-)

How does this news and/or his decision play into things if Davis is recalled?
To: fightinJAG
Is he trying to make sure Issa won't win by splitting the republican vote?

That's the $64K question.

Surely there's got to be a better Pubby in CA rather than the RINO Schwarzenegger?

more from the SF Chronicle:
Schwarzenegger, sounding like a candidate, calls for voter revolution
ERICA WERNER, Associated Press Writer Wednesday, June 11, 2003
(06-11) 11:41 PDT LOS ANGELES (AP) --
He says the only thing he's pushing right now is his next film, but Arnold Schwarzenegger gave a campaign-style speech to an anti-tax group and made a quip about Gov. Gray Davis.
The 55-year old star of the "Terminator" movies, who spoke to a taxpayer advocacy group Tuesday night, brushed off questions about his possible run for governor.
"I'm telling you right now that I'm just thinking about `Terminator' and not about anything else," he told The Associated Press.
But in his speech to the conservative group Club for Growth, he said that the time is right for another revolution at California's voting booths. The gathering was to honor the 25th anniversary of Proposition 13, the state's 1978 tax revolt initiative that inspired a national movement.
"Our elected officials in Sacramento are facing a budget crisis unseen in this state since the Great Depression, and it was entirely avoidable," Schwarzenegger said. "Teachers are getting pink slips, cops are getting laid off and the taxpayers are facing an increase in taxes and California's future is in danger."
His political advisers have said Schwarzenegger will decide whether to run after the July 2 release of "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," and only then if it becomes clear that an effort under way to recall Democratic Gov. Gray Davis will qualify for the ballot.
The actor mentioned the recall only indirectly in his speech, quipping at one point that he had forgotten the governor's name, "but I know that you will help me recall him."
Supporters need to collect nearly 900,000 voter signatures by Sept. 2 to get the recall on the ballot. The most likely date for such an election would be March 2004. If supporters can gather the signatures by mid-July, however, they would have a shot at getting a special election scheduled in the fall.

Schwarzenegger appears close to launching California campaign
FOREIGN STAFF
FRESH from saving the world from the machines in the latest Terminator movie, Arnold Schwarzenegger appears on the verge of launching a campaign to become Californias governor, to save the state from the politicians.
The film star has been at the centre of persistent rumours that hes considering running as a Republican candidate for the post. Like an experienced campaigner, Schwarzenegger, 55, brushed off questions about his political ambitions at a speech to a taxpayer advocacy group on Tuesday night at a Century City hotel, without actually denying them.
"Im telling you right now that Im just thinking about Terminator and not about anything else," he said.
Yet he delivered a campaign-style speech to the conservative Washington anti-tax group Club for Growth. He said: "There comes a point when we the people must demand more out of our elected officials than for them just showing up. Howard Jarvis used to say it is time to show the politicians who is the boss. We are at such a point right now.
"Our elected officials in Sacramento are facing a budget crisis unseen in this state since the Great Depression, and it was entirely avoidable.
"Teachers are getting pink slips, cops are getting laid off, the taxpayers are facing an increase in taxes and Californias future is in danger."
Although Schwarzenegger is not yet a declared candidate for governor, his 20-minute talk, touching on his rags-to-riches immigrant story, his lambasting of Sacramento politicians and his paeans to the people contained all the elements of a political stump speech.
His political advisers have said Schwarzenegger will decide whether to run after the 2 July release of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, and only then if it becomes clear that an effort under way to recall Gray Davis, the Democratic governor, will qualify for the ballot. Supporters need to collect nearly 900,000 valid voter signatures to make that happen.
The actor mentioned the recall only indirectly in his speech, quipping at one point: "This is really embarrassing. I just forgot our state governors name, but I know that you will help me recall him."
At another point he said: "I can feel the beginning of another people's revolt. I can hear the multitude crying, We are mad as hell and we cant take it any longer."
The Austrian-born actor praised the United States for allowing an immigrant who had arrived with his pockets empty and his head filled with dreams to become one of the worlds wealthiest and most famous movie stars.
He also poked fun at his lingering accent and at being married to Maria Shriver, the NBC News correspondent who is a Democrat and a member of the Kennedy family. He said he had promised to stay married in sickness and in health - "and being a Democrat is a sickness," he added.

These people don't think he is, either.
This gives us Issa and Arnold declared, and Bill "Give me a Mulligan on the election!" Simon expected to this week. On the lefty side, the Green Party's Peter Miguel Camejo is also ready to run.
Riordan, McClintock and Bill Jones are exploring candidacies as well.
Who's ready for a governor with 5% of the vote? Looks like you'd better get read

It's not a primary- it's a two step open ballot.
Question 1: Should Governor Davis be recalled? Yes or No
if the Yes gets 50% + 1 of the vote, then there's Question 2: Who should replace him?
There are no party primaries, so anyone that wants to can be listed there. There is no runoff, either, just a plurality.

Well, some people can't stand the idea of Riordan, who actually does know how to turn California around, so you can have the husband of a Kennedy instead, who most likely really doesn't have a clue, how could he?
I am sure he has good intentions, but we know where a road paved with good intentions lead.
