Local Sales Of Hillary Clinton Book Off To Slow Start

Memoir Reveals Account On President Clinton's Affair

POSTED: 7:02 p.m. PDT June 9, 2003 UPDATED: 7:03 p.m. PDT June 9, 2003

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton's new autobiography went on sale Monday morning.

In New York, people lined up for as long as 14 hours waiting to have Clinton autograph their copy of her new book. But in Bakersfield, the sounds of ringing cash registers was not as loud.

Sales started out slowly at Russo's Bookstore.

Valerie Lewis of Russo's Books said, "We were anticipating more of a rush but our community takes a little time to get going and then it really hits."

A few people got their copy of "Living History" to read up on Clinton's eight-year stint as America's First Lady.

Customer Bernice Bonillas said, "I'm a Hilary Clinton fan. There's been so much hype on the news I just wanted to make sure -- be sure I get one."

Clinton's account on her husband's affairs may be the book's hottest selling points.

Clinton received an $8 million paycheck for writing the book.

There is also speculation that she is aiming for an even bigger benefit -- a 2008 presidential bid.

For some Bakersfield residents, the latest media blitz on the New York senator's life seems to have bogged down any interest.

"I've been hearing enough on the TV about it and I think I already have an idea on what it's about," said one customer.

Meanwhile, one customer bought a book on a completely different political figure -- President George W. Bush.

"It's a birthday present for my son who's a political science professor and a Democrat. He has to teach both sides so I thought this book called, 'Made In Texas,' gives a different view of Bush," one customer told KERO.

The hardback version of "Living History" costs about $28. A seven-hour audio version of the book is also available in stores.

Yeah, right. I'll bet that "slow" community gets in gear when Harry Potter is released.

When I think of the losers in this country, who would buy the book, not to mention the audio version, I shake my head in bewilderment.

They may be confusing "slow start" with "peak sales".

Its all in marketing. The next approach should be.

"Living history, now in two ply, softer than Charmin and now half the price".

And for some obscure reason the NYT will list Hil's book in non-fiction category.

There is a bigger story for those reporters willing to dig for it. What is Webb Hubbell and Saint Susan doing for money these days?

Being that the witch has the most expensive commercial promo for a first ladies autobiography the garbage book can't and won't sell even if she breaks in prime time with another commercial.

Since HRC's political base consists of people that think the government owes them something, it seems reasonable that they think Hillary should give them the book.

Not a market to produce a bestseller.
